Hi there.
I just dowloaded Calibre and it looks great...seems easy to use. I have not been able to find a way to convert a table of contents from a saved e-book in PDF format, to a Kindle or other mobile book reader format.

Is there a source for this kind of information? Also...is it possible to have the converter add a page number to the actual page?

Table of Contents are not consulted/converted when converting pdf, it's just not part of the feature set. Maybe with the next revision of the pdf engine which is under development...

Inserting page numbers defeats the point of an ebook - ebooks are reflowable, so the page 'numbers' constantly change based on the size of the device you're using to read it.

IMO, right now, for most PDF documents, forget Calibre and get yourself a good PDF viewer. It's just not worth the trouble to convert and then cleanup/format with Sigil.

I agree 100%, although its not calibre's fault PDF is so inflexible.

PDF is great for creating a document that will look and print the same for everyone but it just wasn't designed to be converted to a reflowable format for reading. If given the option PDF should be read in its native form.

Hey, thanks for all your cool advice. Actually, I am attempting to convert a book that a friend has written so that she can sell it as a Kindle version on Amazon.com. Her table of contents is a nightmare. Long and filled with subheadings. The format simply goes haywire.

I understand, though, that there are a number of companies that Amazon suggests that will re-format your book so that it will show up nicely on their reader...for a fee.

Speaking of E-book readers: Any thoughts on the best ones? I have seen quite a few iPads out and about and their owners seem extremely pleased. (Kinda pricey though)
Happy to make your acquaintance.

Don't completely forget calibre; it's still excellent for cataloging and accessing your PDFs. Just don't click on PDF in Preferences and let the file association in your OS open the file in the appropriate reader.

Welcome to MobileRead, dyvaris.

Although calibre does a good job with many PDF documents there are times when the very natrue of a PDF can frustrate calibre's best attempts. I use PDFs in native format with my Sony reader and I believe that Kindles also have good support for PDF built in.

You can add PDFs to calibre and manage their metadata without converting them to another format and use calibre to send them to a reader.

If you still want to convert your friend's book then maybe you could get a copy in a more suitable format, such as html, since your friend presumbly still has the source for the book.

With regard to page numbers, I would simply let the reader handle this itself rather than trying to code it into the document.
