I think it's true. Here in Italy FNAC has been selling Irex devices since march 2009.

I had hoped to view it in the MediaMarkt Groningen today, but the devices aren't on display there yet, nor did the employee I asked recall having seen the name 'irex' at all yet, either in the order system, or in a 'briefing' on new products they are going to carry.
(they did have a few bookeens/cybooks)

Could just be related to time from irex through the distribution channel. We already have direct from irex shipment confirmations from a few folks who are expecting them tomorrow. For other channels I would expect them to start showing up over the next couple of weeks. They are still saying mid-February for the U.S.

Of course. I had just hoped that, for a change, this would be true:P

Good point, I missed the firm commit on availability through the other channels.

Groningen is in NL, isn't it? Looks like a little PR-Desaster...
I get this answer yesterday:

Thank you for showing interest in our product.

The DR800S is now available, and can be bought at our webshop.
http://www.irexshop.com.

Mediamerkt DE is not selling our device, the first Mediamarkt where you
can buy it is Mediamarkt NL.

I hope this information is sufficient, if there are any questions don't
hesitate to contact us.

Kind regards,
iRex Technologies

Well, the BeBook should be available at the MediaMarkt as well. But when I went there to check (this summer, I might add, so it wasn't really new), not even a trace of anything ebook-like was there. But then, I prefer the Saturn over MediaMarkt anyway and I'll buy my electronics that can be sent by post online (and the Saturn has a much better parking space, and it's free as well and much easier to reach from work!)

(btw, nothing at Saturn either, so, you don't have to bother to look there )

I'd wait about 6 months before trying at MediaMarkt, especially in Groningen, as we all know Groningen is always at least 6 months slow!

A few month ago I was surprised to see the DR1000 in the MediaMarkt in Roermond (NL). I did not have time yet to check if they have (or will get) the DR800 also.

For those of you getting the 800 tomorrow, if it comes with a manual on the device could you post it here. I was looking around the new support site and was expecting to find the manual, but they don't have any documentation posted, although they do have the software for the devices posted.

Download the software for the device, unzip it and you have the manuals in "help" folder.

Downloaded ZIP file is the default SD image with some free ebooks.

I downloaded, but never extracted Thanks for the tip. Just thought the manual might shed some additional light on the device

There are some things here, which, unless the person who formulated these replies is very bad at english, suggests with some finality that the DR800S does not and will not have note-taking capabilities.
Quote:
Can I write on my books?
No. IREX Digital Reader has no scribble function.
Can I add support for my own format?
In general, you cannot add support for individual formats; however, exceptions do exist. Please create a support case in the My Support section and explain what you would like to do. A trained specialist will respond to your request promptly.
Does the DR800 support the zoom function?
Your IREX Digital Reader does not support the zoom function. You can, however, increase the font size of the text on your IREX Digital Reader. While reading a document, select Menu at the bottom, left-hand corner of the display. Select Font Size and choose small, medium, or large.
So apparently no dev access, and very little functionality for (a) viewer. Although it is unclear which formats they are talking about here.

Those are probably too generic to be of much use sine they support different drm formats the same characteristics probably don't apply to all the formats. For example they support epub with standard adobe drm as well as the new b&n drm, drm'd pdf as well as drm'd ereader files. Not bad for drm support compared to most of the readers out there.

I'm pretty sure those answers are intended for the average customer, not developers. As far as I know it is the same environment as the DR1000S, and should be open source... etc. I'd be very surprised if this was a closed device and not open to 3rd party development, all of their other devices are open. You can add viewers/formats to the iLiad and DR1000S, so I expect this to be the same. It's not something the average customer is probably going to be doing though.

As far as the note taking, I'm assuming that page is talking about the initial capability, which they've said all along would not include annotations. Supposedly it is being added later. (insert standard comment about buying devices based on what they can do at the time of purchase, not based on future promises)
