At US ebook stores you can generally self report your country (tell them US) and pay with gift cards or paypal. This should work at FictionWise and Books on Board, and other US stores.

What you have experienced is a legacy of the way that print books are sold. An author (or the author's agent) will sell the US rights to one publisher, the UK rights to another, the German rights to another, the Australian rights to another, and so forth. Then, the electronic rights often get sold separately from the print rights -- usually in the same fragmented way. I think the original reason for doing this was related to the cost of shipping books from presses in the US to stores in Europe. Then it evolved into a way of making more money for the author and his or her agent by negotiating separate deals. By now, it's simply entrenched -- even though the publishers now have the ability to ship print-ready electronic files to a press close to the point of distribution, and the Internet doesn't respect boundaries. (Though my friend in China told me today that the Chinese government is now blocking all access to You Tube.)

I missed this the first time around - but the original book is available at
http://www.diesel-ebooks.com And they are happy to sell to people in Australia. Of course, formats are a bit of a problem, but there's ways around that. The microsoft reader format is the easiest one to convert. |

Kudos to Diesel for selling to Australia, but they'd do well to improve their search engine. It's current state is shocking, it not only gives false negatives but also suggests absurd alternatives. Also in some cases the cover thumbnail is for a different book altogether.

Sorry to be late on the uptake, Heymae. Pop into my own wee publishing house's bookstore at www.bewrite.net. We have many Australian authors (we took over Jacobyte books in Melbourne some years ago). If anything there catches your eye, just email me and I'll be more than happy to send your ebook/s free of charge. Applies to any of our pals here at MobileRead, too. Very best. Neil

Nope DixieGal, ebooks.com are one of the worst offenders for geographical restrictions (yes I know it is the publishers who set these). They are an Australian store, but impose restrictions and there is no way to circumvent these. They have books on their Australian site which are not available to people in Australia but are available to Americans and a range of other countries but not in the country where their store is.
I am really looking forward to DA directs foray into this market place. |
