USA Today Includes Kindle Sales In Weekly Best Seller List

(Just noticed my early morning typing fingers butchered the title - should read USA Today - could the forum moderator please change it for clarity?)
Thank you!

I wonder how/where they are getting their information. Bezos has been so tight-lipped about divulging any specific information about any sales relating to Kindle.

Kindle book sales rankings are readily available. The default is to sort the books in bestselling order.

The article is definitely very sparse on details. I wouldn't be surprised if Amazon will now provide a single sales figure for each title, which includes both hard copy and Kindle versions.

EDIT: WSJ article confirms that the data won't be broken out.

But that provides no information about actual sales figures. That just provides relative data.

This from today's USA Today: (bolding is mine)

'Kindle sales: Starting today, USA TODAY's Best-Selling Books list becomes the first major list to include Amazon Kindle e-book sales. The move reflects both the growth of e-book sales and Kindle's role in that market. "Since 1993, USA TODAY's Best-Selling Books list has always evolved to reflect the ways our readers buy books," says Susan Weiss, managing editor of the Life section. "Adding Kindle to our group of contributors makes sense given the growth in the e-book platform." E-books, for all devices, claimed 4.9% of sales in May, according to book audience research firm Codex-Group. That's up from 3.7% in March. This week, Barnes & Noble announced the launch of its own eBookstore with 700,000 titles."

And more detail (bolding mine again):

"Each week, USA TODAY collects sales data from booksellers representing a variety of outlets: bookstore chains, independent bookstores, mass merchandisers and online retailers. Using that data, we determine the week's 150 top-selling titles. The first 50 are published in the print version of USA TODAY each Thursday. The top 150 are published online.

USA TODAY's Best Selling Books list ranks titles regardless of format. If, for example, Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice sells copies in hardcover, paperback and e-book during a particular week, we combine sales from each format. In our list, following a title's description, we note which format recorded the most sales that week and the price of the book in that format.

Each week's analysis reflects sales of about 2.5 million books at about 7,000 physical retail outlets in addition to books sold online. Those reporting include: Amazon.com, Amazon Kindle, B. Dalton Bookseller, Barnes & Noble.com, Barnes & Noble Inc., Books-A-Million.com, Books-A-Million, Bookland and Books & Co., Borders Books & Music, Brentano's, Davis-Kidd Booksellers (Nashville, Memphis), Hudson Booksellers, Joseph-Beth Booksellers (Lexington, Ky.; Cincinnati, Charlotte, Cleveland, Pittsburgh), Powell's Books (Portland, Ore.), Powells.com, R.J. Julia Booksellers (Madison, Conn.), Schuler Books & Music (Grand Rapids, Okemos, Eastwood, Alpine, Mich.), Target, Tattered Cover Book Store (Denver), Waldenbooks."
