I have said it before.

Apple makes excellent equipment, though expensive.
Apple's software is always mostly good, sometimes very good.
Apple's iTunes store policies and philosophy is awful. I feel for those who have locked themselves into a hyper-restricted relationship with the iTunes store.

Use "open web" not apps then. And get media from somewhere other than itunes store. Easy and available. No wall needed unless decide Apple wall not bother you

I think you need to define hyper-restrictive. The only thing that you are "locked" into is the AppStore. But on the other hand the app store has soooo many apps that there is just about everything you could ever want. Other than that you don't have to deal with iTunes or the AppStore. There are some very good we apps out there also as mentioned.

There is a developer community for iOS that "jailbreaks" the devices and provides third party apps. Apple just doesn't encourage/cooperate with them as much as Google and manufacturers sometimes do with the Android volunteer dev community.
