This really is complete nonsense. Why is anyone taking it seriously? What is this "60 Minutes"? Some sort of comedy show?

Sounds far fetched? Maybe, but very plausible. I would never say never on anything Amazon thinks up. However, this is the ultimate idea when air delivery is spoken of.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-25180906 Octocopters are already used for arial photography. I think if they try it we will have a lot of these http://www.uasvision.com/2013/04/15/...lming-tv-show/ Also my dog is going to love this, got to be easier to catch than a pigeon I agree with you though, got to be taking the mick, health and safety problems alone will make sure this, err, never gets off the ground |

60 Minutes !!

You may be able to get it on YouTube. By the way, UPS ALREADY sends me an email when they are about to deliver a package to me and allows me to re-schedule it to a time and date of my preference so their package does not wait on my door step. One has to register for MyUPS to get that service. The Amazon Prime Air Drone will deliver to WINDOWS in big cities so apartment dwellers can share in the fun. They will NOT have to hover anywhere since the customer will choose the date and time of delivery. By the way, our CIA and JSOC drones can hover for days over targets as required. That is not a big deal anymore. Helicopters have been used to hovering for years. A few years ago no one needed one day delivery and settled for one week if they were lucky. TODAY all my Amazon deliveries come in ONE DAY with a few coming in two days although the Prime customers are only guaranteed two day delivery. It is probably LIKELY that UPS and FEDEX will also have delivery drones soon and just have not bragged in advance like Bezos did. I believe the Federal Government passed a law allowing private ownership of drones but many US states now have bills to limit their use to police and fire departments. Amazon may be restricted on the specific states which will allow them to use this new service. Obviously, packages will have to be a certain size for drone delivery. I doubt if TV's and PC's will get drone delivery. Also, they will only be able to deliver one, small package at a time and then return to the service center for another package. I have a hunch that Kindles will be the first product eligible for drone delivery the end of next year. Last edited by sirmaru; 12-02-2013 at 10:02 AM. |

That was my initial thought as well. Kind of like flying cars, which I was supposed to be driving today, at least according to the magazines of my childhood.

The device shown in the video is an "octocopter", similar to this one:
http://www.steadidrone.eu/octocopter-ei8ht/ Big problem: flight time is around 10-15 minutes maximum, and it has to get there and back again in that time. So unless you live within a few hundred metres of your nearest Amazon depot, you're going to be out of luck... |

It's an interesting not-so-near-future possibility, but the ~2015 claims smack of a Google-style April Fools prank. Very confusing. It is neither technically nor politically possible for this to be real in the near future.
