Google Earth native for iPad now out
I was using this last night with the older version blown up and hoping they'd update it. Well, now, it's iPad ready and looks great!

Nice! I just tried it in a car driving thru SF ( not while driving)
The GPS keeps up very nicely- but it actually makes the back of my iPad warm! (about a third of the way down-between the apple and the 3G antenna area. |

What is the benefit of this compared to the satellite image overlay in the "Map" app?

In practical terms, there isn't one. You get some fabulous animations, and the ability to add a wider range of overlays than the Maps app. For navigation/planning, Maps is just as good.

I use it for the overlays. I like the wiki links and photos. This is because I use it to look at places other than my town. Last night I toured around NSW Australia.
