I am enjoying the MobileRead version of "Les Mis" right now. (Thank you, Harry!). Isabel Hapgood's translation is beautiful. She was from Boston, I believe, so it is an American version that was contemporaneous with the original work. Perhaps others have said this, but if you purchase a copy, be careful about whether it is an abridged or unabridged version. Sometimes that is not clear.

The Wretched (Les Misérables Book 1) [Kindle Edition]
http://www.amazon.com/The-Wretched-L.../dp/B00AM7E2DW

wonder why change the title..

A brilliant new translation by Christine Donougher of Victor Hugo's thrilling masterpiece, with an introduction by Robert Tombs. The Wretched (Les Misérables) is the basis for both the longest running musical on the West End and the highly-acclaimed recent film starring Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway.

The title isn't changed, it's simply translated, like the rest of the book. Virtually all books that get translated also have their titles translated. Would you look for an English version of Jules Verne's classic under the title "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" or "Vingt Mille Lieues Sous Les Mers"?

A more pertinent question would be why some of the other translations don't translate the title!

An interesting question, Harry. Hugo's other best known work, Notre-Dame de Paris is best known in English speaking countries by its translated title, The Hunchback of Notre Dame. I believe Wilbour's nearly concurrent translations of each volume bore the English title The Wretched but according to this article, the French title was on the back of each volume, and Confederate soldiers took to calling themselves "Lee's Miserables." Perhaps that is why the French title stuck.

That's not even a translated title, of course - it's a completely different title from the original. "The Wretched", on the other hand, is a direct translation of "Les Misérables".

True. And it's a misleading title as well given the scope of the book.

Just a side-note to "The Wretched":

The publisher decided to change it to the [less correct but more popular title] of "Les Miserables" after having first released the ebook as "The Wretched."

I bought "The Wretched" from Amazon - something like 99 cents; this was a great bargain - and then found out about the controversy surrounding the title, perhaps due to the popularity of the film and the idea that this correct translation of the title would get lost in the shufffle.

I ended up copying the new cover and making another ebook copy for my use. (Remember, I had purchased "The Wretched.")

I now have both ebook copies with the two different covers.

Very true. Notre-Dame (the cathedral) can very rightly be said to be the real protagonist of the novel. Quasimodo the hunchback is a minor character.

I'm now unable to find that other cover The Wretched/Les Miserables.

If I'm incorrect, I'll retract all of this of course.
