Get over yourself. It's nice to have an opinion, but thrashing it just makes you look stupid.

There are obviously differing viewpoints about this book, and no one is going to persuade the other that they are wrong. The book was not the winner.

Please, just drop the subject. - Moderator

The first post of this thread has links to the books, but we do have an omnibus edition of 5 books by Dickens, that was uploaded by HarryT.

mobi/prc and ePub

The five books are:

A Christmas Carol (1843)
The Chimes (1844)
The Cricket on the Hearth (1845)
The Battle of Life (1846)
The Haunted Man (1848)

Thank you for the link, Dreams.

I downloaded a lot of PD books from Amazon the day I got my Kindle and I keep forgetting to look for better versions. The Amazon free "classic" books are really bad quality, format wise. I think they just parked an intern in front of a scanner with a stack of books, and told them to upload them.

I downloaded this omnibus in epub last night and started reading a little (couldn't help it seeing it sitting there in my reader...new titles are just too tempting!) and it looks well formatted so far.

That's probably exactly what happened. The worst is when you actually pay for a book and it's badly formatted, but the free ones are sometimes atrocious. That's why I love the library here so much; I know I can expect quality.

I rather like this version, from Seabound: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34777

It's in LRF, but it's converted really nicely in calibre to mobi for my kindle. Would imagine calibre would also do a nice conversion to epub.

HarryT's version is also nice, but I found that converting the epub version to mobi in calibre worked better on my kindle that the mobi version you can download on-site. That gave me the chapter skips, whereas the on-site version doesn't.

As for paid versions, I've found that the Barnes & Noble classic series are really good.

I agree that having proper chapter skips is nice, but as long as I have a working TOC, I'm okay without them. I actually didn't learn about the chapter skip capability until 2 months ago (give or take).

What I'm most happy about with Harry's version is that I got 3 brand new (to me) stories as well - The Cricket on the Hearth, The Battle of Life & The Haunted Man.

For those of us who read ePub, Harry's version has a broken ToC. The correct external ToC is very much incomplete.

I may not be understanding you. What do you mean external ToC? Because the links for the ToC that lists the books in the omnibus all work, and all the books are there. What is broken and incomplete?

I'm new to the Kindle and will have to check into what "chapter skip" is. [EDIT: Ah, got it. I just had never called it "chapter skip".]

Jon, if there is a problem you have noted, it would be much more helpful if you could send a PM to HarryT about this. Harry takes pride in his work and if there is a problem someone notes, he is very interested in how and what.

Maybe Jon means that each book's ToC "should" be in the main ToC as a sublevel? (Just guessing, could be totally wrong!)

I have no problem whatsoever with the way it's done now (each book's ToC is in the beginning of the book) and I would not call it "broken".

I am so grateful to people that do all this work for the rest of us!! THANK YOU!!!!

Hear Hear! The MR Library is fabulous, and the work is usually top notch. Harry's uploads are wonderful as he does put a lot of time, effort and pride into his work.

caleb72, sight unseen, I would recommend any of HarryT's uploads. He always takes his time and carefully proofreads everything he uploads. He does a very nice job and strives to make sure every book he works on is ready for prime time before it enters the MobileRead Library. I've paid good money for books he's uploaded for free (live & learn!).
