Kindle App losing place
Hi all. I'm (finally) more than halfway through Infinite Jest. (Reading this 1000+ pg book was pretty much the main reason I whined about not having a Kindle until my wife bought me one for Christmas, then when I whined about how much better it would be on an iPad, she got my friends to chip in for one for my birthday).
Unfortunately it seems that the Kindle app on the iPad has issues with mobi files that are this big. (Yes yes, mobi isn't such a great format... I know.) In flipping back and forth from the footnotes, or doing searches, I've experienced odd behavior, including whole pages ending up italicized, footnote references missing when I return to the text, and most annoyingly, losing my place in the book when I quit the app. The first two seem to be formatting issues that are usually solved by flipping a few pages forword or back. I have a feeling the issue with losing my place is due to some weird state the app is getting into with regards to the "back" button for history. If I do a search for a term and start jumping to the results, then hit back to get to where I was before the search, then quit the app, when I restart the app, I am often returned back to one of the search results, NOT my place in the book. This is frustrating, to say the least. Has anybody else experienced this problem? Thanks. Last edited by notyou; 09-11-2010 at 02:56 AM. |

Not sure why you are having those problems. I just finished reading Shogun a few months ago, which is a few hundred pages longer. I had no problems on the Kindle or on the kindle app on the iPad.

Bookmark your place before you jump around....at least you can get back to it. Also, email kindle support, it's likely a formatting problem ib the book

I've had this happen a couple of times in the past week on my iPad. I am now bookmarking my place. I think it is related to the Kindle app getting mixed up as to location in the book when synching (at least in my case) when reading the same book on multiple devices (in my case, iphone and ipad).

I just got this app and the iPod yesterday. What happens is that if you're in a book and you start jumping around, it doesn't seem to remember your last page. (use the bookmark feature, even though you shouldn't have to) But if you're reading and simply hit the button to leave the app and go back to your home screen, it does remember your place when you restart the app.
This should be quite an easy fix for Amazon. I'm going to shoot them a note when I get a chance. |
