Well received self pubbed mystery/fantasy free today. Sample appears competent.

Silas: A Supernatural Thriller by Robert J. Duperre
http://www.amazon.com/Silas-A-Supern...9438866&sr=1-1

Quote:
Ken Lowery is a man at odds with his life. He hates his job, is disappointed in his marriage, and feels resigned to leading a mundane existence.

That all changes when his wife brings home a rambunctious Black Labrador puppy named Silas, who forges a remarkable connection with Ken and begins to heal his inner turmoil. When some neighborhood children start to go missing, he takes it upon himself to protect those around him and is thrust into a surreal world where monsters roam. Not everything is what it seems to be, he soon discovers, including his new best friend.

Scott Nicholson gives us Kiss Me or Die today.
http://www.amazon.com/Kiss-Me-or-Die...9439517&sr=1-1

Quote:
Richard's life is a horror story. And it's all the fault of those people inside his head.

Richard thinks he has them stereotyped for his autobography, but he’s about to get a new tenant: the Insider, a malevolent soul-hopping spirit that may or may not be born from Richard’s nightmares and demands a co-writing credit and a little bit of foot-kissing dark worship.

Now Richard doesn’t know which voice to trust. The book’s been rejected 117 times. The people he loves keep turning up dead. And here comes the woman of his dreams.

Michael Langlois is offering his two self pubbed titles. One seems sci-fi and the other more thriller-like. Decent reviews all around. The author's page.

Originally printed by Porcupine Quill in 2007. This fantasy is called a "children's book for grownups." It's been recently updated which means edited and copy-edited. It's free at amazon and from the author's website as epub.

Beasts of New York 2.0 by Jon Evans

http://www.amazon.com/Beasts-New-Yor...9450553&sr=1-2

http://www.beastsofnewyork.com/

Quote:
A violent, epic, action-packed urban quest full of very eccentric, often hilarious, extremely dangerous characters who also happen to be animals — the wildlife of New York City, to be exact.

Beasts of New York has been published in a gorgeous print edition by the prestigious literary press The Porcupine's Quill. You can also download or read it for free online: see www.beastsofnewyork.com for more.

The Queen's Adept by Rodolfo Martínez (Author, Translator), Jordi Balcells (Translator). This appears to be semi-self-published in Spanish and now available in English. A sci-fi adventure? Few reviews so consider this a wild card.

http://www.amazon.com/The-Queens-Ade...9453173&sr=1-1

Quote:
The People's Covenant and God's Hammer have raged a Cold War that has lasted for over twenty years. A war without armies, where battles are fought in the dark and information is the most dangerous weapon.

In this world —which sometimes seems the Middle Ages, sometimes the Renaissance and sometimes the Nineteenth Century— lives Yáxtor Brandan, empirical adept at the service of the Queen of Alboné. A relentless, amoral and unscrupulous character, Yáxtor fights to recover his own past as he tries to prevent a new player in the espionage game to end the world, as he knows it.

I already had this one. It must be a repeat, still looks good though. Modern Fantasy doesn't come up often enough.

Duperre's been featured a few times for having had a few things included in small-press outlets alongside more established genre authors, according to his mostly self-pub ISFDB entry.

At the very least, he should be decently readable as far as stringing together coherent punctuated sentences that form reasonably comprehensible paragraphs go (something which is not a majority feature in the KDP Select exclusive-or-else slushpile, unfortunately).

Yes, it is a repeat. I see it was free in Feb and April 2012. And possibly last year too.

Often I'll let a title brew for awhile hoping it will pick up more reviews and ratings by the time it is offered again for free.
