Canadian government requires non-DRM "legal deposit" of digital works

The regulations now require publishers to decrypt encrypted data contained in a publication and to remove or disable systems designed to restrict or limit access to the publication before submitting it to the LAC.

Moreover, publishers are required to also provide the LAC with a copy of the software necessary to access the publication, the technical information necessary for access, and any "meta-data" associated with the electronic publication.

Note that Canada has fairly strong Orphaned Works legislation which would allow reproduction of works abandoned by their creators. Requiring works to be submited to the LAC in unencrypted format makes it possible to implement this policy.

Now that's a plan I like. Seems fair too. If a company or person just stops working on something that he has been selling and just walks away. This could work.

That's nice but no one here I know, has the faintest idea of what an ebook is. Only printers and writers know that every written work is in digital format at some point.

When I bring the reader somewhere, people think it's a newfangled PDA and spit at the absence of color. Most of them actually like my box better. Sigh!
