The main issue is that the updates are just incremental updates. There's nothing earth shattering from one model to the next (in most cases). I'm only upgrading because my iPhone is almost worthless. Any iPhone before the iPhone 4 should be upgraded.

Where was the Samsung hate then? Where were the accusations of money grabbing? "Typical Samsung. Despicable. Anti-consumer." I'm sure that was on the lips of every Android fan these past five years.

So, yeah, Apple’s going to benefit a bit too on these new sales. The accessories market is an area where Apple pulls in a ton of revenue, for iPods, iPhones and iPads. The company brought in nearly $2 billion to $3 billion selling accessories in fiscal year 2011 alone, according to some estimations. And much of those accessories that Apple makes, like cables and adapters, are almost pure profit, since they don’t cost that much to build in the first place.

The iPhone 5 is using the new 'Lightning' port which means we all need to buy dumb, expensive adapters if we want to keep using our old accessories. Unfortunately, those adapters don't support video and iPod out.

Are you asking where was the Samsung hate back when every cell phone out there used a different connector? Everyone did it, so there was just general bitching about the need for something more universal from everyone. Which led to many manufacturers moving to mini USB to where we are now with almost everyone using micro USB. They gave up all their proprietary connectors and gave customers what they asked for. Why couldn't Apple do the same? If Sammy or HTC released some different connector in this day and age they'd get complaints too.

There is the fact that's it's reversible. And since the phone and the new cable haven't been torn down yet, we don't know what they do that might be beyond the capability of micro-USB. I'm willing to wait a week to find out.

When I lived in Europe, this problem had already been solved when the government made it obligatory to sell phones with a micro-USB charger. Apple got an exemption in exchange for giving free 30-pin connector to USB adapters to all its customers.

This will not prove to be a big deal. Happens once every >insert long period of time<. After several months, all done.

What does Apple do when it deems a technology past its expiration date? They abandon it. What do tech writers do when Apple abandons these outdated but ubiquitous technologies? They pitch fits. Happened with the floppy drive. Happened when the original iMac went USB-only. Happened with optical drives. Happens every few years with display adaptors.

This iPhone 5 release doesn't bode too well for Apple's medium term future. Now they are having a hard time stopping the tide of competing, more advanced and more attractive, phones. They have milked this design too long.
