Why doesn't Calibre support doc files?

I have a doc file and want to convert it into mobi. Since Calibre doesn't support doc, I saved it as rtf. But the conversion failed anyway saying that the rtf file has features that Calibre doesn't support. Of course I can save it as txt and before converting it to mobi. But bold fonts and italics and some images would be lost.

Wonder why Calibre doesn't support doc files. It would be so much easier. Thank you.

Might this help?

I've never used it, but it appears that it might get you half way there, then convert the epub to Mobi with Calibre. Of course you'd have to install OpenOffice (or perhaps LibreOffice) to use it.
