Why do you purchase books?
I was thinking about this for a bit today, and wondered what this forum thought of the matter.

Yeah. I think books should be free when the author is dead. They should not be free when the author is alive (unless the author wants it to be free). Unplanned (by the author) free stuff makes the deadness of the author more likely. I want the writers I like to stay alive as much as possible and create more delicious product for me to consume.

To show the author appreciation. The same reason why I donated to Calibre.

I purchase books because if I don't purchase them, I can't get them. Oh, I suppose the alternative is the darknet, but quite often even that requires a purchase, such as a purchase of membership.
I'm guessing, because "purchase" is not defined, that "purchasing" means "pay money for." I consider purchasing as including free books, particularly in those cases where it is free as a result of a coupon. |

Why do I purchase books ? To read them of course.
The author decide the price to be paid for the book, i decide if it is "worth it". If not I'll just go read something else. Last edited by EowynCarter; 04-13-2011 at 05:49 AM. |

Yes. To read the book and be able to re-read it is the main reason to purchase a book. And if no overriding reason exists then I try to follow the laws. Also I might want to support the environment that produces good authors i like to read.

I purchase books because that's how I get them in my collection permenantly.
I borrow a lot of books from the library but those that I want to read again and again (probably about 1/4 of the books I read) I will purchase so that I can read them whenever I want to. |

Yep, I agree. (Though I guess often it's the publisher deciding on the price, rather than the author.)

Not enough poll options.
I purchase books because the ones I want have a price tag on them. |
