HTML/Offline Browsing on K3
Has anyone tried getting the browser on the Kindle 3 to read a local website?
On my old Kindle 2 I had a folder of HTML files at the root of the kindle that I could easily access via a bookmark to: file:///mnt/us/myfolder/index.html (as detailed in this thread) ...but on the K3 the browser now complains about the "file:///" and says only http and https are supported. Uh-oh. Does anybody know how to get the previous functionality back again? |

Exactly. Avoid "file:///". One "/" first, cause it is for root directory.

So what would the full URL be? http:///mnt/us/myfolder/index.html doesn't work either.

No luck, it doesn't seem to know how to handle that either. Hmm.

http://forums.techarena.in/portable-devices/1318710.htm Another option might be html file that has tags non compatible to one on embedded browser. What is the content of the file? Check out the source and remove all offending tags by the hand. |

Yeah, on the K2i the browser kept re-activating Whispernet even if I had it off, but it'd always ask me, not just fail. At any rate my Wifi is on all the time already.
And this is the same HTML folder that was working with my Kindle 2i, so the code shouldn't be the problem. It looks like something may have changed with the K3 itself... Last edited by Snorkledorf; 09-27-2010 at 06:59 AM. |

Could you go into any directory on the reader using browser?
If yes, just follow the tree. If no, cannot recall why it wouldn't work. |

No, the browser never seems to access the filesystem at all.
Trying "file://" (which worked well on the K2) now makes it say "Sorry, I can only do http:// or https://". Trying to access a local file with "http://" comes back with "Unable to load the requested page." Still looking around for answers. |

I agree with snorkledorf. Kindle is hard coded to only allow http:// or https:// no matter what you do. However, there is a solution available in the kindle store. Someone created something called the Kindle Bug App Browser for viewing websites offline, using games from the internet offline, and using tools/apps such as calculators, a stopwatch, and other apps offline.
The kindle bug app browser uses the cache from the kindle's internet browser to view websites and do things offline. Just type "kindle bug app browser" in the kindle store and it will come up or click on one of the two links below. There are currently two versions available but the seller makes all versions/updates available to anyone that buys any of the versions. kindle bug app browser - version 1 kindle bug app browser - version 2.3 |

I've heard that simple html files work if you change the file extension to .txt. Not sure if this still works on K3.
Most HTML is easily converted to .mobi format. You might want to just do that. |

The .txt file thing sounds interesting, but I'd still need to access it in the local Kindle filesystem, which can't be accessed anymore.
Using Calibre or something to convert the (1000-page) website to mobi format is certainly doable. I'm just concerned about how inconvenient it'll be to have to convert it anew for each file that gets added, as the folder o' html files I used to browse on the K2 is a local copy of an ongoing site. But on the other hand I'd still have to add the new files to the Kindle if I were able to view it using the browser like before, so I suppose it's not a huge tradeoff. It's just unfortunate that existing (and useful) K2 functionality was stripped out from the K3. Edit: It seems the Kindle Bug App Browser is a book that holds access to a number of web pages in the cache, which while useful doesn't allow me to freely navigate a 1000-page website offline. Nice, but not targeted at what I'm trying to do at this point. Last edited by Snorkledorf; 12-22-2010 at 07:34 PM. |

Just an update: the 3.1 firmware doesn't restore this functionality. "file:///" still doesn't work.
