digital media and printed media are the same...

I don't understand why a lot of people share the viewpoint that "digital media and printed media are two different things..."
RIAA (Record Industry Association of America) has often repeated that stealing music from the internet is just like stealing a car or a CD from a store.
Their position I assume also applies to digital books. Why shouldn't we then have the same exact rights for digital books as we have for hardcover books? After all in the court of law, RIAA has insisted many times that there is no difference!!!
