Does a Kobo have these features...

I'm thinking of switching from a Kindle. Does a Kobo have these features,

1) The ability to put books in collections, and, most importantly, the ability to see which books have not yet been put in a collection (the Kindle doesn't).

2) The ability to find your way back to your page in the e-book when cross-referencing or looking something up, sometimes looking something up that was in something you were cross-referencing in the first instance. (The Kindle is not very good at this.)

Thanks,

With Kobo while you can add books to collections on the device itself, it is far easier (if you use calibre) to manage collections via calibre.

If you do decide to manage via calibre, make calibre the canonical source for collection management; changes made on the device itself will be discarded by calibre.

Changes can be made via calibre, and on the next connection of your device to calibre will be automatically updated.

A book can belong to as many collections as you want, however there is no means (either on the device or in calibre) to tell what books are not in a collection.

It's easy in calibre to do any search. For example
Code:
!tags:mycollection
would show all the books not in mycollection.

Yes; but the O/P wanted to find books that are in NO collection.

Additionally if one uses multiple calibre columns as the source for collections then your approach would not work.

Thanks,
See here if that fits what you want to accomplish. I find it pretty easy to search for a character name's previous reference in a book, for example, then go back to where I was.

This feature is only available when reading ebooks, not in pdfs.
Edit: I take it back, I checked to be sure, been a while since I read a pdf: this feature is available also in pdfs.

Please don't say "it can't be done in calibre" for simple stuff like this.

Calibre has a template system that is Turing complete and the ability to add plugins, so likely there's nothing it can't do, or at least, can't do eventually.

Thanks,
Everything works better on a Kobo. I have Paperwhite 3, following is better or only on Kobo:
  • My books views, filters and sorts. You can make that the Homepage.
  • Better Collections support. Set up a custom Calibre column. Collections need a registered Kindle and are buggy. Can't be organised on PC except ancient Kindles.
  • Series works with any defined by Calibre on 2nd connection. On Kindle Series info is rare and only from Amazon and can't be edited.
  • Bookmarks and export of them work better.
  • Highlights & Annotations work better, three main methods to export per book, not one big log file like myclippings.txt.
  • Works best of all ereaders with Calibre.
  • Ability to install a few apps without jail-break.
  • Ability to manually install older FW if a Kobo update is problematic. Nearly impossible on Kindle.
  • NO payment details needed. Can use fake email or none to register and Kobo have never send emails to real registered email if not used with Shop.

How about if the collections are being created using a template? It is not as simple as you seem to think. I might do what you suggest as a first pass, but, I wouldn't trust it to be perfect.
