Steampunk space travel . . .
I just picked up Journey to the Heart of Luna by Andy Frankham-Allen for $0.99. It's the first book in the steampunk series Space: 1889 & Beyond. Several more of the books in the series are also available at Amazon for $0.99. I'm going to give this series a try and I just started reading it. Last edited by alansplace; 02-04-2016 at 09:11 PM. |

I'm four chapters into Aeronaut's Windlass and so far... not so good. Hopefully as things move along, the characters will gain a little depth and the writing seem less forced. I remember the first 2/3 of Storm Front being blah, too. At this point, it's about 60% exposition interspersed with clunky, cliched scenes and equally cliched prose. The characters so far are just tropes being put through the motions. As pseudo-nautical works go, it's not comparing favorably to my recent listening of the Temeraire books. As whole-cloth fantasy, it's not comparing favorably to Codex Alera, either.
Again, I hold out hope that at some point the exposition will thin out and Butcher will find his footing with the characters and prose. In the meantime, the audiobook makes a decent soporific. |

I never got into the Codex Alera myself. I finished it, but it did not rank high on my list... The first chapters of the Aeronaut's Windlass needs to introduce the characters of course. They will flesh out more as the story progresses (most of them), as you learn more about them and their motives. If the story hasn't clicked with you at the moment they arrive at Habble Landing, it will not click at all I think.
