.lit conversion question

so many posts have mentioned the simplicity of buying cheap books in .lit format, breaking the microsoft encryption and converting them to .lrf

could someone please tell a n00b how this is done? thx!

Please, you're no noob when you do not know something. Not knowing things is more common then knowing something.

You need a program called convertlit. You can find it easily with google and there are only two programs inside it. One that will help you find out your 'secret' key which your books are made to belong only to you and the other program, clit, will turn your lit books into HTML with the help of that secret key I mentioned.

Try it.

to help you build LRF files with it.

Note that convertlit is a command line program, but there is a GUI wrapper that makes it easier to use. Google ConvertLIT GUI. See also lit2lrf.

The GUI wrapper won't work until you've use the command line program to set it up. Read the Readme that comes with ConvertLIT on how to do it.

No need to do this unless you need some real special formatting or to edit something. Just take the un-DRM'd lit & run it through lit2lrf (use it through libprs500 for GUI) and you're good to go.

I much prefer using the command line to run ConvertLIT and lit2lrf.

Ditto. ConverLit's GUI's Downconvert option, that spits out un-DRM'd lit's has been the way to go for me. Some of the html conversions have been unusable, but the lit's have been excellent. And, if you liked HAL in 2001, the fact that the DRM-free lit's can be read back in audio (very machine-like) is entertaining ... and if you have friends with visual problems, could be a major plus.
