Vote with your wallet. That's the best way to counter the agency model.

Of course, it being the Guardian, it has to blame America

I want to offer a word of thanks to the American book publishing industry
Never mind that the two biggest of these are owned by a British company (Penguin) and German (Random House)...and Hachette is owned by a French company. And Harper Collins is owned by News Corp, which is owned by an Australian.

They might be US companies, but non-Americans are pulling the strings...

Yes, you have a good point there.

Based on recent research the European book companies are much bigger ripoffs than the Americans - who are way more reasonable, at least as far as we are concerned.

Thank you.

America's omnipotence is vastly over-estimated. We're on the verge of being a third world country...albeit a very big one. Look at our roads, our airports, our health care system, our Congress, our economy, our educational system, and our culture in general, and it's hard to find any reason other than pure jingoism to stab our fingers in the air and proclaim, "We're #1! We're #1!"

This not-#1-edness does relieve us of a lot of responsibility for all that is wrong with the world. Penguin for example (British) seems to be as clueless as the densest American corporation...say, General Motors or Hewlett-Packard, who seem bent on self-destruction.

lol. At least the right end of the horse is getting it. There are a lot of those in this world and the rest of us have to deal with them.

No way the USA is close to being a third world country. Trust me on this one.

I don't know about that, but... I guess that I have a mountain and the sea — makes all the difference

That said, we have just had two American families move in down the road, and a Canadian staying with us for a while. Next thing we'll have Aussies retiring here.

South Africa is also a long way from being 3rd world. Eritrea has both mountains and sea. Not sure what difference that makes to quality of life in that context.

Cape Town is relatively well run and prosperous.
