I feel we should have a vote on this and decide the use of the term classic as PD only is highly incorrect.
Instead on voting about "What is classic", I think we should just change the May selection to "Public domain = Life + 70", then the meaning is very clear and no one's feathers are ruffled.

I must disagree strongly. There is a lot of old crap in the public domain. "Free" and "public domain" do not equal "classic."

C'mon, somebody third Anna Karenins already. We are reading enthusiasts, so we do not fear big books.

I'll put in a third nomination for Anna Karenina. Haven't read the great Russians since Crime and Punishment back in '70s, so I'm about due. Plus, if I can finish The Wise Man's Fear in nine days this should be a snap, right?

I'll nominate H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds. One heck of a true classic SF work.

Quote:
H.G. Wells's science fiction classic, the first novel to explore the possibilities of intelligent life from other planets, it still startling and vivid nearly after a century after its appearance, and a half-century after Orson Wells's infamous 1938 radio adaptation. The daring portrayal of aliens landing on English soil, with its themes of interplanetary imperialism, technological holocaust and chaos, is central to the career of H.G. Wells, who died at the dawn of the atomic age. The survival of mankind in the face of "vast and cool and unsympathetic" scientific powers spinning out of control was a crucial theme throughout his work. Visionary, shocking and chilling, The War Of The Worlds has lost none of its impact since its first publication in 1898.

I'll 2nd this as well. Which makes for my last nomination.

Edit: This was my 500th post.

I would discuss only those few chapters in the second part where he goes to work in the fields. I think those are among the best pages ever written.

In any case do not worry. I do not think it will be nominated even.

I would like to second "The diary of a nobody" by George Grossmith and Weedon Grossmith.

It is delirious. With images even. There is an edition on line also.
