In the early morning rain
With a dollar in my hand
With an achin' in my heart
And my pockets full of sand
I'm a long way from home
And I miss my loved ones so
In the early morning rain
With no place to go

Good morning, everyone. Rainy Tuesday and a thousand Cherry Blossom images to edit... Good job for a rainy day. Unfortunately, it's the part of the job I'd really prefer to skip!

Big mug of East India Company's "Royal Breakfast" tea to start the day, some left-over Tandoori chicken, keema curry and some fresh nan for an energy breakfast, and it's off to the darkroom...aka... computer programs.

do you miss darkrooms Stitchy? I played around with photography while I was in the Army and loved playing around with exposures and light etc. I'm sure it can be duplicated with computers, but the patience involved with the "old" ways.... *sigh*

Yes... and no. I loved the anticipation, waiting and watching as the image slowly came up on the paper in the tray. Same as I miss the 'sound' that the old rear curtain shutters made when you pressed the button. But, I don't miss the hours spent starting from scratch when a retouching idea didn't work out the way I wanted. It's nice to be able to just 'go back in history' in Photoshop to before you applied the bad correction.

America's 'Father of B&W Photography,' Ansel Adams, said that for every hour he spent behind the camera, he spent 11 hours in the dark room adjusting and correcting images. Yes, today we CAN duplicate every single thing we ever did in the dark room, and do in in seconds compared to minutes or hours, and have the results come out even better with less skill required for the operator. Obviously, the more skill the better the finished product, but thanks to today's software, even someone with little knowledge and ability can turn out some good pictures. Most people don't realize just how much time is spent in the 'darkroom' making those corrections, before they see the photo in a magazine or on line. Here is a correction I did on a model, on a photo that I didn't wind up choosing for use, but the idea gets across.

We had a photo lab on the Army base I retired from, too, and I took some classes there. I loved the chemistry involved, including all the smells and drips.

Evening, and all is well. I didn't get nearly as much work done today as I should have, but I don't mind. I enjoyed today.

And I'm enjoying tonight too! With a pitcher of Mango Lassi!

When I was in college, way back in the 70s, I had a small kit for developing Ektachrome (and similar) "slide" film. I used to do it in the bathroom. Those home-developed photos have faded faster than the commercially processed ones -- store developed Kodachrome has been most stable -- but in the past few years I've been able to scan many of them and restore them to pretty decent condition.

Right now, the first mug of tea for the day, while waiting for the technician from Dell to come out and fix my son's computer. It just needs a hard disk, but it's still covered, so I'll let them do it.

Enjoying the last of my morning coffee and listening to the wind chimes go crazy in the high winds here. Not nearly as melodious as with gentler winds.
