Where is a good place to find audio drama's?
Will be taking a long drive this weekend and want to try listening to an audio drama... not just some guy reading a book to me, actual dramatization of a story with sound effects and multiple actors, etc? I do not mind paying (assuming I can afford it) just no idea what to look for.

You might try audible.com which specializes in audiobooks (and is part of Amazon). In the keyword search field type 'full cast' or 'dramatized' which should return a list of about 600 available titles. (Most of these titles should also be available through Amazon directly, I'm not sure which has the better price, if you are only looking for one or two books.)
The things that come to mind that I have listened to with a full cast and sound effects are: 1) Many of the Star Wars books 2) The Rogue Angel series 3) The first two books of the Bill Baldwin's Helmsman series Frequently, the sound effects are overdone and drown out the dialogue. And after awhile in the Star Wars books, for example, the lightsabres, blasters, and music become repetitive and frankly annoying. Personally, I prefer a book with a good narrator who can do multiple distinct voices and not all this extra stuff. What genre are you interested in? Perhaps I or others can come up with some more specific suggestions. Duane |

The BBC produce enormous amounts of radio drama, and it can all be downloaded free from the BBC iPlayer site. Unlike TV, there are no geographical restrictions on downloading radio programmes.

OTR means Old Time Radio. These are radio programs (for the most part) before the commercial popularization of television became a pervasive part of the national psyche in the United States. This is how America entertained itself in the 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s. The shows are wonderful - fantasy, detective, horror, western, mystery, humor - the list is endless. Most are free and are either in 1/2 hour or 1 hour episodes. Do this: Download an episode of The Whistler in MP3 (the higher bit-rate, the better), burn it on a cheap CD and stick it in your CD or DVD player, turn the lights down low - and here is the secret: CLOSE YOUR EYES AND LET YOUR IMAGINATION DO THE REST. I have over 15,000 OTR shows. Go here and click on "The Urge To Kill": http://www.oldtimeradiofans.com/temp...The%20Whistler Don Last edited by Dr. Drib; 11-15-2011 at 06:54 AM. |

If you want to listen in your car, it's the BBC's podcasts that you'll want, rather than iPlayer (iPlayer is for on-line streaming). The podcast page is at:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts The stations that will be of the most interest are "BBC Radio 4" and "BBC Radio 4 Extra". |
