Post Rockwood, Roy: Great Marvel Omnibus. v2, 10 Oct 2008

Six book juvenile series, published between 1906 and 1913, by "Roy Rockwood" (a "house name" of the Stratemeyer Syndicate). These books, like so many other boys' books of the time, cash in on the twin themes of invention and exploration and are, in many ways, similar to those of the "Tom Swift" series, produced by the same publisher (and also available for download from this forum).

The series narrates the adventures of Professor Amos Henderson and his two boy assistants, Mark Sampson and Jack Darrow. Like so many other books of the time, there is a "comedy element" provided by a hapless black man, Washington White, in what was standard fare for the time but is monstrously offensive by today's standards. Starting off with fairly routine Earth-bound adventures, the series rapidly progresses to wildly improbable "interior of the Earth" and "Outer Space" adventures.

The books in the series are:
  • Through the Air to the North Pole (1906)
  • Under the Ocean to the South Pole (1907)
  • Five Thousand Miles Underground (1908)
  • Through Space to Mars (1910)
  • Lost on the Moon (1911)
  • On a Torn-Away World (1913)

Three more books in the series were written much later, between 1925 and 1935, but they are not in the public domain, and will not be so for many years. They are also rather different in nature, featuring Mark and Jack as adults.

Enjoy!

Decided to move all six books in the series into a single volume, rather than splitting them over two, as was previously the case. Deleted the old "Vol 2" and renamed this one as simply the "Great Marvel Omnibus".
