Trouble converting Uptown Local, Not in My Patch

I bought the DRM-free EPUBs of Uptown Local and Not In My Patch from Diane Duane's store. The original EPUBs open fine in Adobe Digital Editions, but I wanted to reconvert them to EPUB to apply my formatting and font options, which work fine with all other EPUBs, including other ones I bought from the same store today.

However, when I reconvert the file to EPUB, ADE loads the title page, then when I try to page down gives me an error box:

Assertion failed!

Program: ...
File: ..\..\src\rmsdk_api_reader.cpp
Line: 1360

Expression: loc != NULL

For information on how your program can cause an assertion failure, see the Visual C++ documentation on asserts

(Press Retry to debug the application - JIT must be enabled)

Abort/Retry/Ignore

When I try reading Uptown Local with Calibre's built-in reader, it works fine. But when I try FBReader for Windows, it just gives me the last story in the book and nothing else.

Can anyone help?

This is really an EPUB question.
That error (guessing here) leads me to believe that there are now broken adept residue in the document. Since Calibre's viewer does not use Adobe specific commands, no problem there

It does sound like a broken book. Might be worth trying to convert to a different format (eg AZW3) and then back to ePub, and see if that helps.
