FREE (and bargain) books for the Kindle - November 2010

It's a new month and there are new freebies. Several from last month are still free, so be sure to check the previous thread, HERE.

This is the sticky thread for free and bargain books in the Kindle store for November 2010. Rather than try to update the first post with a list of all the books, which is continually changing, instead new books will be posted at the end of the thread and each month there will be a new thread, letting the old one drop off the top of the forum. Anyone can post to the thread, but there are a few rules:
  1. Only books in the kindle store. Yes, I realize that free books elsewhere will often work on the Kindle, but those should be reported in the Deals forum. This list is for those who only get their books from the Kindle store (and there are many who do) and don't want to deal with having to download and transfer books from elsewhere.
  2. Do not edit old messages to add new books. Most people read this thread by clicking to see new posts. If you edit old messages, then no one is notified of a new post and often won't see the updates when they click to see new messages. If you need to edit an old message to correct a link or other info (or even want to note a book that is no longer free), that is perfectly ok.
  3. No shortened URL's. No one likes to click on a link and end up somewhere that they were not expecting and few of the URL shorteners allow you to set up a preview mode so that you get a chance to see the destination first. So, use the full URL in your posting (yes, you can still just post a link on the title, but with the full URL, everyone can look at the status line or use Copy Shortcut to see where they will go before the new site opens).
  4. No author self-promotions (unless your book is free in the Kindle store) or self-published books. If you are a Kindle author and posting another's work, it should be either a non-self-published book or one that you've read to the end and would not feel embarrassed to recommend to your mother, closest friends and priest/minister (assuming they read the same genre). In other words, the writing is exceptional (no misspellings or substituted words, grammar rules obeyed formatting that looks good on the Kindle screen). It isn't that we don't want you to post, but author self-promotions can overwhelm the list and a special child forum in the Deals and Bargains section has been provided for this purpose.
  5. No excerpts or sample chapters (business minis are ok, so long as they are not just samples of another book)
  6. Please indicate the price of any book that is not being offered free. You don't have to say "free" if one is, but it would be nice if you include that in the message. The maximum price for bargains is a bit flexible, but generally under $2 and nothing over $5, unless it is a volume that contains several titles in one and the total price per book puts it into the bargain realm or the digital price is below 25% of the list print price and 50% of the digital list price; this lets you include high priced reference books or cookbooks that are extremely heavily discounted, for one reason or another (but, let's not include books that Amazon has at $9.99 all the time, ok?).
  7. If you see the genre of a book and it isn't clear from the book description that you post, please include it; conversely, if someone leaves this off, don't post to berate them, but you can post to include that info for others.
  8. If you are posting a book that is free in the UK Amazon store, please say so. Also, if you do not have your current location set in your profile (below your name, it shows next to all of your posts), then add that to your post (as it "this is free here in Canada"). To all: please note that whether or not a book is free in a country other than the one a person is logged into is not easily discovered. The person who posts often has not way to determine that you will pay a different amount if you are in a different country. Also, prices at Amazon can change minute to minute and freebies can last as little as an hour (possibly less), so always check the price before one-clicking. If you discover that a book costs more (other than the "standard" $2+VAT international fee Amazon often takes onto books outside the US), you may leave a single comment with the country and price/restriction (for example: "This book costs $9.99 in the UK" or "Not available in Canada").
  9. Try to keep chit-chat to a minimum. That will keep notifications of a new message in the thread down to (generally) only when a new book has been posted, making the thread more useful for all.
If you agree or disagree with the rules, have more to be added, etc, please send me a private message, rather than replying here. I'll discuss it with the moderators and we'll modify as needed.

The Matchmakers, by Jennifer Colgan, is another freebie from Samhain, complete with content warning.

Book Description
Two wrongs don't make a right, but they just might make a perfect match...

Nick Garret is flypaper for females, and he likes it that way. Women stick for a while, and when it's over they fly away. So does he. Then one rain-slick night a young woman steps in front of his pickup truck, and his jaded, cynical life takes a sharp swerve toward trouble.

Calliope did the only thing she could think to get Nick to steer his truck-and his life-in a new direction. Banished from the Fae realm for granting a wish gone bad, her punishment is an impossible task; redeem the unredeemable Nick Garret. If she fails to help him pair three couples in everlasting bliss, he's doomed to never experience real love. And she will share his fate-as a mortal.

Nick can't decide if this charming, exasperating woman is a dream come true, or a saucy, sexy nightmare sent to drive him insane. Yet something about her makes him want to rise to her challenge. He'll do anything to make her stick around a while.

Besides, how much trouble can one half-naked, seemingly wingless faerie be?

Warning: This title contains sensual love scenes, mischievous Fae, removable wings and hot men in tool belts.

Feed My Sheep: A Passionate Plea for Preaching, by John MacArthur, et al.

Book Description
Is Biblical Preaching Doomed to Extinction?

In the Old Testament, God decried the fact that His people were perishing for lack of knowledge about Him. The same seems to be occurring today. There is sharing, suggesting, plenty of storytelling, and lots of preaching to felt needs in modern pulpits. But the authoritative, expositional opening of the Word of God is becoming scarcer all the time.

Jesus told Peter, Feed my sheep (John 21:17). Such is the mission for all Christ's shepherds. But when preaching is neglected, those who have been called to feed the sheep do little more than pet them.

In this book, eleven pastors and scholars issue a fervent plea for preachers to preach the Word. Here is encouragement for pastors to persevere in their calling and wisdom to guide congregations in holding their shepherds to the biblical standards.

Blood Lines ($6.72 US), by Grace Monroe, is free for UK (England) customers in the Kindle store, in both the US and UK store.

Book Description
A woman is lured to a lonely ruin in the Scottish Highlands and strangled almost to the point of death. As she prays for mercy, her hopes are shattered when her unseen assailant begins to carve her face, and she is left alone to bleed her life's blood into a shallow grave. In Edinburgh, 29–year–old lawyer Brodie McLennan is coming to terms with the discovery of the family she never knew she had. She must also fight the increasing resentment of the Edinburgh Bar. As the complaints to the Law Society about Brodie pile up, her grandfather and legal legend Lord MacGregor fears that Brodie is in danger and advises that to protect her reputation, she should become a crown prosecutor-accept 'silk'–something that rankles with Brodie's natural inclination to protect the underdog. When Lord McGregor's prophecy is fulfilled and Brodie is implicated in the disappearance of a fellow lawyer, she realizes he is right–she is now a marked woman. Then the missing woman is found in a remote mental hospital, the walls of her cell smeared in blood, the name 'Brodie' written over and over…Back in Edinburgh, a knife is found with Brodie's fingerprints. It seems that someone is out to stop Brodie's rise to the top–at any cost…

In Praise of Savagery, by Warwick Cairns, is free for UK (England) customers in the Kindle store, in both the US and UK store.

Book Description
One man’s journey in the footsteps of a great explorer into the heart of Africa.

As a young man, Warwick Cairns met the then elderly explorer Wilfred Thesiger and the two men struck up an unlikely friendship. Invited to visit him at his African home, Cairns decides to make a bit of an adventure of it and do some of the journey on foot.

When he himself was a young man, Thesiger led an expedition to explore the course of the Awash river in Ethiopia. Every westerner that had gone before him had been killed by local tribesmen. Needless to say, he survived.

Alternating chapters chart Warwick’s journey with that of Thesiger creating a captivating dual narrative that is part travel book, part biography, part autobiography, part history with fair doses of philosophy and humour thrown in for good measure.

In Praise of Savagery is a highly original book that defies classification but is always effortlessly readable.

One Hit Wonder, by Charlie Carillo, is the second freebie from this author (Raising Jake was free last August).

Book Description
From the acclaimed author of Raising Jake comes the hilarious, heartfelt story of a former pop star who goes back to his roots—to answer the age-old question,“Whatever happened to…?”

Back in the Eighties, Mickey DeFalco was America’s teenage heartthrob with spiky gelled hair, slanted sideburns, and a number-one hit single—“Sweet Days”—a sappy love song he wrote after his high school sweetheart, Lynn Mahoney, broke his heart. Now approaching middle age, Mickey is lucky to land a singing gig at a bar mitzvah. So the one-hit wonder-boy is making a different kind of comeback—returning to his old stomping grounds in Queens, living with his parents, and sleeping in his childhood bed. Just like in high school. And speaking of blasts from the past, Lynn is also back in town—as beautiful, beguiling, and baffling as ever…

Sometimes life can feel like a broken record. But even a one-hit wonder deserves a second chance.

Book Description
Some people are simply great at their job. They always seem to say the right thing; do the right thing. They are mentioned in every conversation. Everybody likes them. They get promoted. They get pay rises. They get along with the boss. And somehow, they do all these things without being unpleasant, breaking much of a sweat or seeming to put in excess effort. Do they know some secret we don't? Yes, they know The Rules of Work. These rules aren't about how to do your job, day-to-day (assuming you are pretty good at that already). The first edition of The Rules of Work became a global phenomenon, topping bestseller charts around the world. This new, even better, edition includes 10 brand new rules to take you further, faster. These rules are the guiding principles that will improve both what you do and how you do it, giving you the unmistakable air of confidence that will win you admiration, respect, and the next promotion. With The Rules under your belt you'll have the edge in everything you do, without having to compromise your principles.

Guard Your Mission, Stay in Control, by Seth Goldman, is a business short from FT Press.

Book Description
Seth Goldman, cofounder and TeaEO of Honest Tea, the fast-growing pioneer of organic brews favored by discerning tea lovers including President Barack Obama, shared the advice that has shaped his company and career: Never lose control of your company's money, whether you're spending it or raising it. And run your business as if you are going to own it forever.

I got lots of bad advice as I was building Honest Tea. Luckily, I was smart enough not to take most of it. Among the worst nonstarters:

* Add more sugar (which would have undone one key factor that made us stand out).
* Rebrand Honest Tea as a low-carb company. (Those low-carb diets, with people eating bacon three times a day, have little appeal for our health-conscious clients.)
* Sell energy drinks. (There was almost zero overlap of energy-drink buyers with our core customers.)

Any of those ideas would probably have wrecked the company. But fortunately, we benefited from two wonderfully wise advisers-Gary Hirshberg, cofounder of Stonyfield, and Jeff Swartz, CEO of Timberland. Their counsel shaped my company, my career, and my life. They preached two core rules: Never lose control of your company's money, both incoming and outgoing, and run the business as if you plan to own it forever....

Market Upside Down: How to Invest Profitably in a Shrinking Economy, by Vinh Q. Tran

Book Description
he U.S. economic crisis of 2008 isn't over! The next bubble, explosive government debt, is brewing. At the same time, the economy can't generate growth, the treasury is exhausted, the Fed's balance sheet is over-stressed, consumers remain deep in debt, and short-term interest rates are at near-zero. Intelligent investors can't just mourn the death of easy profits: they want and need new strategies for success through history's potentially worst equity market. In Market Upside Down, Dr. Vinh Q. Tran presents those strategies. Tran begins by explaining why the U.S. financial crisis will only get worse. He then provides professional and active investors a comprehensive framework for profiting in an upside down market that could last for decades. Drawing on his market expertise, as well as experience as money manager to institutional and wealthy investors, Tran shows how to build wealth and generate return in times of crisis with a focus on what will matter most in the coming years: liquidity and risk management. Tran helps investors explore global investments and opportunities that won't depend on the troubled U.S. economy or a reinvigorated market soaring, and shows how to profit from the coming age of scarcity. Along the way, he demonstrates how to use fixed income, hedge funds, and non-traditional investments, with minimal equity risks to create a portfolio that is positioned to provide liquidity, profits and importantly to weather future crises.

Powering the Future: A Scientist's Guide to Energy Independence, by Daniel B. Botkin

Book Description
The future of civilization depends upon the continuous availability of sufficient energy. But we’re approaching the practical limits of some of the energy sources we depend upon most. What should be done? Few issues are as controversial. In Powering the Future, a leading scientist cuts through the controversy, presenting the facts about our energy needs, desires, and supplies and the environmental and human effects of obtaining and using energy.

Dr. Daniel B. Botkin objectively assesses the true prospects, limitations, costs, risks, dangers, and tradeoffs associated with every leading and emerging source of energy, including oil, natural gas, coal, hydroelectric, nuclear, wind, solar, ocean power, and biofuels. Next, Botkin addresses the energy distribution system, outlining how it currently works, identifying its inefficiencies, and reviewing options for improving it.

Finally, Botkin turns to solutions, offering a realistic, scientifically and economically viable path to a sustainable, energy-independent future: one that can improve the quality of life for Americans and for people around the world.

A Girl Named Mister by Nikki Grimes (Christian Fiction)

Product Description
Quote:
Nikki Grimes, a bestselling author known for titles such as Dark Sons, Barak Obama: Son of Promise, Child of Hope, and Voices of Christmas has written a gripping book from the perspective of a girl named Mister (Mary Rudine) who finds herself momentarily distracted from her faith commitment to purity by a handsome boy named Trey. After one night of weakness, Mister finds her entire life has changed, even if she can't yet accept all the changes occurring within her are real. When the emotional scars of losing her innocence are more lasting than she imagined, Mister turns to a book of her mother's, which contains poems from Mary's perspective. As both Mister and Mary's voices play out in the story, a full and meaningful portrait of Christian faith, trust, and forgiveness emerges, along with the truth that God can use even the most unplanned events in our lives for his greater glory.

It's not free in the US store.
It is free in the US store, but, as stated - only for UK customers. If you don't have a UK address, you'll see a US price (or a "not available" message). It's what those outside the US see on most of the free books posted to this thread, as a great number end up being US only.

More Blood, More Sweat and Another Cup of Tea by Tom Reynolds (This is free again)

Product Description
Quote:
Meet Tom, an Emergency Medical Technician for the London Ambulance service. It is Tom who shows up to pick up the drunk tramp, the heart attack victim and the pregnant woman who wants to go to hospital in an ambulance because she doesn't want to call a taxi. Tom is also a man who rails against the unfairness of it all, who bemoans the state of the NHS and who ridicules the targets that state that if the ambulance arrives within eight minutes and the patient dies it is a success and if the ambulance arrives in nine minutes and the patient's life is saved it is a fail.Welcome to the topsy-turvy world of the emergency services. From the tragic to the hilarious, from the heart-warming to the terrifying, Blood, Sweat and Tea 2 is packed with fascinating anecdotes that veer from tragic to hilarious; heart-warming to terrifying and Tom deftly leads the reader through a rollercoaster of emotion. In the brilliant and bestselling Blood Sweat and Tea Tom gives a fascinating - and at times alarming - picture of life in inner-city Britain and the people who are paid to mop up after it.Captures the thrills, heartbreak and frustrations of medicine in a way that resonates with readers around the world.
