Where to get ebook devices in Australia?

I have been trying very hard to get one!! Where on earth do I get an ebook reader device (like the Sony Reader) here? I have asked all the major electronic stores and no one seems to know what I am talking about. They only know about PDAs.

Can anyone help me please? I am desperate to get one.

Devices such as these are only available "mail order" in most countries. They are two specialist to be sold retail.

You can buy a Bookeen Cybook from http://www.bookeen.com or a Sony Reader from http://www.bhphotovideo.com

I found the same problem, I tried all the retail book and electronic stores ranging from A&R to D Smiths, Dymocks etc. They all looked at me as if I were a creature from out of space. Bookreader waddyamean bookreader, you want something that reads books for you??
In the end I got the Sony from Ebay (new) and am awaiting the Bookeen one from their own site.

Hi Guys,

I'm an Aussie in Singapore, and faced excatly the same problem IE Where to get an Ebook device?

I worked with a friend in the US to get a kindle for a friend, with all the hassle that goes with a non US account.

I got an Astak EZ reader (ECO in Aust) from an MR member in the fleamarket forum on this very site! I like the formats EZ reader can support, and rarely use DRM'ed anything, so that's not an issue for me.

Ebay and DA direct seem to be among the better places to find ebook readers, though there are other classified sites and small sellers out there that can assist.

If you are looking at Kindle or Sony, be very aware that their sites do not support non US accounts. May or may not be an issue for you.....

Banana go to the website of DA Direct - they are a Melbourne supplier of books and eReaders and on August 20 will launch their version of the Hanlin eReader/beBook (the ecoBook - sic -) It will sell for $449. (plus postage I guess).
It is pukey that us poor ozzies unless we are geeks are locked out of the Sony and the Kindle. i guess the issue is the market is too small for the copyright issues to be negotiated.
This leaves us with the choice between the Cybook (pretty pricey) and the Chinese/oz product. To me the advantage of buying locally is technical support and fewer hassles if there are problems. It's depressing as I'm sure the Sony is a better product, not to mention the new cheaper ones Sony is releasing in the States end of August.
Christine Bell from DA Direct already has a promo on mobile read for the Ecobook. She is very helpful if you want to talk to her about EReaders.

Deals direct are offering a few ebook readers - the cheapest is a 6 inch knockoff of the Foxit Eslick. It only has 64Mb of storage and only does TXT & PDF (plus a few image formats), but for 299 (or 269 if the special holds) it's quite good value. Calibre is happy to do conversions and download to it. Usual E-Ink display etc. Comms are USB-only. I've tried installing the Foxit firmware upgrade but that doesn't seem to work.

I picked the reader I wanted (with lots of help from different posts here) and ordered it online through Amazon and used a mail forwarding company.

I didn't buy the reader from DA direct because the $449 pricetag put me off a bit.

For the Sony PRS-600 I paid in total
US$ 281 for the reader + US$8.50 for mail forwarding + US$40 for shipping
= US$ 329.50
roughly AU$355.

And I'm a happy chappy

If you want them in Australia you can get one from Deals Direct as someone mentioned above. I ended up buying an Astak Pocket Pro from the Astak website. Cost me $257AU all up with shipping. I'm very happy with it.

Best reader in OZ and NZ

Had a good look around and it seemed that bebook eco reader and EZreader were the same. I decided to go for the BeBook in the end. They are available through australia (bought mine at the co-op) or at their website www.bebook.net.au. The difference I noticed:
- better software (faster)
- better protection cases (in all colours)
- good support (both local and their int. website)

The protective casing won me over in the end, it won't be the first time I crack a screen, and I have been told eInk screens do not fall under warranty and cost over 200 dollar to repair.

You can also buy a Astak reader (Mentor, EZReader, Pocket Pro) from www.astak.com or www.theezreader.com.
