PVI to release e-book reader in partnership with Les Echos

Prime View International (PVI), the Taiwanese company who has been pumping E Ink displays out in volumes for the Sony Reader & co, is said to release its own e-book reader in partnership with the French daily Les Echos this spring. According to this news, PVI's reader will not only feature an E Ink screen (no details about size), but also Bluetooth, WiFi, and GPRS connectivity. It will cost around 500 Euro and comes with a year's subscription of the digital edition of Les Echos.

My college French is pretty rusty, but Babelfish did a nice translation.

Thanks Tadw for the tip!

Almost 5 years after the false start from Cytale and its Cybook, more news are coming about e-ink. Presented for the first time in March 2006, the e-ink version of Les Echos (a french newspaper, mostly about economy) should be released in Spring 2007.

"This version of Les Echos will give access to content from the newspaper, the website, stock exchange rates, a lexicon and podcasts. We'll be ready in April, maybe March." said Philippe Jeannet, responsible for the electronic editions of the newspaper, during Intergraphic.

After a few test with devices such as the Sony Reader and the iRex iLiad, Les Echos finally chose the chinese company, PVI, whose player is also equipped with an e-ink screen. "Our device will support Bluetooth, Wifi and GPRS connections. There's 2 batteries ready for the device, one for the connection, the other one for the screen with an estimated 8500 pages turns. " explained Philippe Jeannet.

Although Les Echos will have ads in this e-ink version, the economic model will be based around subscription. It should retail with a PVI device and a single year of subscription for 500€, but they're also working on a way to deliver this edition without selling the device or for those who already own such a device. "It's a great offer for everyone. The device will cost almost nothing for our subscribers who already have to pay 416€ for a full year of subscription, and the editor won't have to pay anymore the 55 cents cost of printing and delivering the newspaper."

Les Echos could work in the future with other newspapers to deliver their content for e-ink devices. According to our intel, there's still some ongoing talks with Sony and Amazon too.

Ok, good pricing model at 500€ for unit and a one year subscription compared to a paper annual subscription of 416€, but I wonder what happens in the second year?

Well I guess that some math should do the work... 416€ (subscription) - (55cents (cost of each newspaper) * # of issues for a year)

By the photo, I believe the Bookeen, STAReBOOK, and this Les Echos use similar OEM module.

Misunderstanding...

My company, Tebaldo, is managing Les Echos project through Ganaxa, a development company based in France. If it is true that we consider using their display for our device, PVI is NOT releasing its own e-book reader. I think you have to modify your news. I will inform Clubic, too, even it is not exactly what they said in French.
Thanks,
Bruno Rives.

This means I'm not the only french guy around here... Bienvenue Bruno, je te conseille d'aller faire un tour sur l'url de ma signature aussi, on travaille sur tout ce qui est mise à disposition de contenu pour les readers e-ink.
So, Les Echos would use the technology, but PVI is not releasing any device, just selling the screen for such a device is that right ? This is quite different from what Clubic said indeed...

They opened the subscriptions for Les Echos: http://www.lesechos.fr/epaper/inscription.htm

There's 3 different choices:
- Les Echos + STAReREAD = 600€
- Les Echos + iLiad = 700€
- Les Echos for the PRS-500 or iLiad = 365€

They will offer a few e-books too from Nathan and M21. M21 is the editor that published Gutenberg2.0 using Mobipocket and did a demo on the iLiad during Le Salon du Livre. Does it mean that all of these books will be available on Mobipocket and that the STAReREAD from Les Echos will support this format ? We're currently lacking information from Les Echos but they will start selling these devices in a few days. We can expect additional informations real soon.

Do you know if those prices include the devices too? Seems a bit high if it doesn't ....
