Dim screen on 3G

My husband's 3G just arrived today, and the first thing we noticed was that the screen is dim. I can't find anything in the very basic instructions that came with it about brightening the screen, and I searched the support page at Amazon with no success. What's the deal? Did he receive a defective Kindle?

Do you have another to compare it to? What kind of light are you viewing it with?

Bear in mind, it's not an LCD. You can't brighten it or anything, it depends on the lighting in your room.

It should look like well, a newspaper, black letters on a light grey background.

It's hard to tell whether it is defective without comparing it to another Kindle. The screen on the Kindle has no backlight (it needs external light) and the contrast is not perfect. So, some people may find it "dim" even if there is no problem with the screen. This picture shows how the screen should look in a well-lit environment.
