Renaming files
Sorry if this has been asked before
If I cut & paste some text into a rtf file, it saves with the first few words of the document but when I put it onto an sd card it shows up on the reader with a title such as TXT. How can I rename it with a title of my choice. Thanks Colin |

If you use Microsoft Word, you can set the "Title" and "Author" that shows up on the Reader for an RTF file by selecting the "Properties" item from the "File" menu and filling them in there.

Open the RTF file in a text editor, and add the line:
{\info{\title Book Title}{\author Author Name}} near the start of the file. You may need to experiment with finding the correct place to put it, but it's not generally too critical. Immediately before the line starting "generator" generally works OK. |

It does seem extraordinary that the Connect 'software' will not do a simple rename.
How can it be that Sony cannot do better? Come on you Sonies, I know you're watching... - fix it, and the 'native pdf' falsely offered. |

Welcome to MobileRead, John Wheater!
Easy on the volume, eh? My virtual ears are ringing! I'd guess that it's not that Sony can't do better, but rather that they decided not to for whatever reason. I could guess that they decided that their software was for managing the content in the sense of moving it about, as opposed to editing, so they just didn't include support for that. But it would be a guess. As to the PDF thing, yeah, we've kicked that around quite a bit, and you'll find a number of folks around here who'd agree with your take that it was "falsely offered," but most of us agree that they only said that the Reader would open PDF's without converting them to another format, not that they claimed a page size roughly 2.5 times the size of the Reader's display would be legible on that display. I'm guessing that you may not have known about that limitation before you got a Reader? I'm sorry for that, I know it's extremely frustrating, especially as a surprise. That's one of the reasons we talk about the limitations here so much -- we want folks to know enough about these devices so that they get what works for them, and don't get what won't. The good news on that front is that Sony has signed on to support Adobe's Digital Editions, so there's hope that the situation might improve. Doesn't help today, but it's still a good sign. |

And don't forget we have Rasterfarian and PDFRead to help deal with the PDF problem. And they seem to work well from people who have used them.

The Connect Software is not meant to be for changin the meta-data. You do that when you create the LRF or RTF. As for PDF, yes, it's a bust overall. The screen is too small.

But the "fault" (if that's the right word) lies with the PDF format, not with the Reader. The Reader will display PDFs, but it can't "magically" make an A4/Letter page be easily viewable on a 6" screen.

That's an easy answer. Allow the size button to zoom in on the PDF and the number buttons to scroll. 1 for up, 2 for down, 3 for left, and 4 for right. Then even though the PDF is now larger then the screen, at least we can scroll around to be able to read it.
