We found a seed company that sells only heirloom seeds and refuses to work with any seed company or organization selling genetically modified seeds.

There is a growing body of evidence that the specialty vitamin trade is not actually all that good for our health. People are taking amounts that the body cannot handle and there are increases in some cancers because of it. NPR has reported on it a few times here.

Nutritional suppliments are not regulated in the US, unless they make a specific health claim. It actually can be dangerous to over do the vitamin load and many folks hear "take more vitamin X and you will have more energy, better sex, longer hair" whatever the claim and off they go. The human body needs a certain amount of each vitamin and mineral. Those amounts were determined a long time ago when we could not eat the equivalent of 8 cantelopes (one of the examples on the NPR program I heard) which makes me think we don't need a vitamin that gives us the nutritional load of 8 cantelopes each day.

Eat a healthy, well balanced diet and you are going to be fine. You don't need broccoli based vitamin suppliments if you eat your freaking broccoli.

That said, the reliance on medicines in the first world is insane. You probably don't need blood pressure meidicine and insulin if you eat your freaking broccoli and exercise. So I am not a big fan of big pharm or the natural vitamin approach. Both are an over response and have made us more dependent on them and less dependent on actually payign attention to what we eat, how much we eat, and how much we exercise.

We need to get off our asses and move and eat food that is good for us and not in sizes that could feed a small dinasaur.

Yo, Prof. That is true. If I have my diet, weight, thyroid and exercise under control, my blood pressure and cholesterol are fine. I do need thyroid meds and thyroid does affect the BP and chol. I've got cousins with diaetes, chol, bp, the whole nine years and it is all preventable.

It is not easy to take care of ourselves these days. At least in the US, going out to eat is nuts. You are given a portion that is enough for two to three meals. At many places, sugar is added to everything (including chicken and vegtables) so that foods that are good for you become less good for you.

We went to Cracker Barrell on vacation, a bastion of not good for you but oh so tasty foods. I ordered the BB a sweet potato and asked what came on it. The thing is cooked in brown sugar and butter. So I ask for just a plain sweet potato, no brown sugar and butter, and carrots. The carrots were cooked in brown sugar and butter. BB only had a few carrots but almost all of his sweet potato.

That was the kids menu. The vegtable sides for the kids menu.

I have had moderate success with changing my eating habits the last few years, mainly because I want to be active in my BB life. I changed my eating patterns so I wouldn't gain a ton of weight when pregnant and have maintained (for the most part) those patternrs since his birth. For the first time since high school, I am actually at a healthy weight.

It aint easy. And it is made less easy with the promise of a drug to help cure our problem or a vitamin to fix a deficiancy. People talk about the money that big pharm makes but how much money do the vitamin makes make? There is a reason they are not regulated, they lobby to prevent the FDA from regulating them and proving that there is any benefit to the use of vitamins and other homeopathic medicines.

There is a place for drugs in treating folks, I have taken them. We all have. But we would need fewer drugs and fewer vitamins if we took ownership of our healthy. Eat at least five servings of fruit and veg a day. Aim for different colors or fruit and veg. Limit your protein to lean porteins mostly and the portion size to four ounces. Get up and walk for 15 minutes 2-3 times a day. Move. Don't eat the massive portion at the restaurant. Ask for steamed instead of soaked in butter.

It isn't easy. Planters pistachions have become my potato chip substitute. Enouch salt to make me happy and they are good for me. Kind bars replaced snickers and peanut butter cups (Chocolate, peanuts, fruite bits, fewer calories, and I can read everything on the label). Bring fruit to work as a snack. Bring veggies to work as a snack. It has taken me 5 years to alter my habits and I keep a daily log because it helps me stay honest with myself.

Because I really like the potato chips and fries and snickers and eating the massive portion and carrots cooked with brown sugar and butter. We have been conditioned to eat that stuff and the portion sizes. And then take vitamins and drugs to fix the deficancies in our diets and the problems caused by our diets.

So I don't give a rats ass if vitamins are regulated, they should be. They are not a fix all. They could very well be damaging to you. We regulate medicine (poorly) to prevent side effects and make sure it does what it says. Vitamins are no different. They are not natural, they are chemical reproductions of stuff we should be getting if we ate right.

ugh

I think that counts as a rant?

These are rather large amounts of Omega-3 they were looking at.

I've always sworn that too much broccoli could kill you and too much news can be bad for your health too! This can be translated as, look substance B is shown to do something positive. Hey, I'll take extreme doses of it. Flash ten years forward to, too much of substance B is toxic to the system. Balance folks, balance.

The world might be a healthier place without the media.

With the way people are taking large doses of vitamins, we are going to see that broccoli can kill you.

The amount of DHA in my Prenatal vitamin is about 20 times less then the DHA in my husbands brand. It is crazy. Why would his healthy eye version have so much more then my Prenatal? And there is no way to tell if he really needs that much because the claims behind fish oil tablets do not have to be scientifically proved because the vitamin industry is unregulated.

I don't know how much is safe for BB but it is in his yogurt and his formula. You can buy milk with DHA now. How much does a 1 year old need? I know how much Tylenol he should get. I know how much of an anti biotic. No idea about fish oil. We know what happens if you take too much Tylenol, it adversly effects your organs because you poison yourself (so don't take more then the recommended dosage) but we have no idea if the DHA in BB formula and yogurt is going to cause him to be at risk for prostate cancer in 30 years.

We won't be buying the milk with DHA but the organic yogurt he gets has DHA in it.

The thing is, 30 years ago we didn't worry about vitamins because there was not a market for them. Now we are health conscious (well, we pretend to be) and there are 9,000 health suppliments with no real science behind them but many people take them anyway.

The studies on multivitamins are inconclusive if they help you at all but by all means lets take 10 times the recommended dosage of vitamin X.

Because there really are people out there who will say 'Try the Broccoli Diet! I did and lost 273k by eating nothing but broccoli!' What tt doesn't say is that they died three weeks after the posting from a lack of amino acids or electrolyte imbalance.

Everything is bad for you when taken to excess. Even water. The key to better health, in my not so humble opinion is "moderation in all things, including moderation." McDonald's Big Mac is not bad for you if you only eat one or two a month. Neither is fried chicken, Hershey Bars, or tequila. But if you eat them every day, you're gonna die a grim and grisly death!

Science is constantly changing our views of various foods and their impact on the body. At one time, the American Medical Society said that there was absolutely no need for Vitamin A in the human diet. Obviously they changed their minds on that one. "Butter is bad for you, so eat margarine instead!" We heard that one for years. Now we know that better is better for your health than margarine... provided you use it in small amounts. Too much is no good.

Eat a balanced diet (and this doesn't mean balanced every day... the body can easily tolerate balance over a week or two...) of veggies of all colors, fruits, meats, fish, and poultry, and you will be nutritionally healthy. Do keep in mind that even healthy people die...

....and unhealthy people may lack a vitamin or two because of an unbalanced diet over an extended period. That's when it would be handy to be able to buy them.*
*Yes you can get all the nutrients you require by eating the right food. Unfortunately, for that last couple of decades, obtaining nutritious food is getting more difficult as corporations like Campbells and Nestlé refine genetically modified corn syrup, soya and salt and fill boxes, bottles, cans and tubes with it and sell it as breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Big Pharma want the natural therapy market and the best way to get it is to strangle it with expensive regulation because they know regulation and have deep pockets.

The cry for more regulation on natural dietary supplements is propagander. The Banksters, Monsanto and Big Pharma pull the strings and the regular media and beurocrats do the dancing.
