Taking your Reader on a holiday?

It seems that the stalwart protectors of the US Borders are now Copyright Cops. Can you prove legal title to books on your Reader, or prove their public domain status? How about those songs on your iPod?

Apparently you're ok if you're a member of the faculty in a college or university, though.

This is fairly ridiculous, as can they or you prove you have ownership of 3000+ songs on an mp3 player? For the part, most customs people tend to be blue-collar workers and probably won't know that you're carrying eReader, let alone whether you own all the content on it. No offense to the blue-collar customs people on MobileRead.

I am a bit curious about what we aren't told in the news article regarding how she presented herself at the border. I've crossed back and forth into Mexico on numerous occasions and the only time we really were messed with was when my friend made a stupid comment, then it was off to vehicle search time. Border guards don't riffle through your stuff unless you give them a reason to, perhaps her passport entries caused some concern? Who knows but them and her since we weren't there.

It sounded to me as though her passport entries threw up the first flag. Searching her sketchbook and getting all upset over a sketch of a car with crosshatches seemed pretty weird to me. Maybe she had a political sticker on her car that the border guard didn't like.

Zemple said that before the incident she didn't know border guards could search computers and other digital devices "without reasonable cause ... I was surprised to learn all your civil rights are suspended. It was a form of intimidation."

Perhaps if you are going to travel internationally you should learn what your rights are during a border crossing.

Yeah.

The problem is, when you're crossing the border to enter the US, you're not IN the US. That's how they get away with suspending nominal civil rights in that instance.

When it starts happening at borders to states, I'll be concerned.
