'The Nook: A Missed Opportunity'

Quote:
why would B&N make what appears to be a stunningly bad decision to produce a device that is unusable for anyone who lives overseas?
--
This is an especially puzzling move, considering that expats without ready access to English books in print are some of the most desperate (admittedly limited in number, but devoted nonetheless) potential buyers.
--
Can anyone explain why B&N would have a “rights issue” that Amazon has been able to solve? Please let me know.
As a Kindle fan, I say 'Meh' to the nook. Stupid name too.

Right, you can't put books on it by other means...

Why do people insist a reader is "useless" if you can't connect by wireless (either wifi or 3G)?

From what I understand, it reads epub books and thus is perfectly usable for people over-seas. Though, you might "enjoy" more functionality if you're in the States.

Besides, look how long it took Amazon to gear up for non-US sales--and they were already involved in non-US sales. It takes time. B&N is already in the process of hiring an international e-commerce team. I don't think they'd be doing that if they weren't preparing to make the leap.

nook is no worse then the name Kindle. And the fact that the nook reads ePub gives it a step up from the Kindle.

This New Yorker Reporter needs to learn patience. It would be a financial mistake for any company to go international on a launch of any new product, esp if it is completely new the the company.

I'm sure they'll get there just let them have a little success and experience under their belt before they expand their market.

I think you mean international, not national. And you're right. This is why Amazon and Sony started with a US only product.

In the case of Sony, AFAIK, "national" means Japan only, while, USA is actually "international"....

Oh, good grief! This is getting to be like the Mac vs. PC religious wars. Sometimes I wish the e-book market would go back to being the fringe hobby market it used to be.

Agreed. Amazon should just support the largely unneeded epuz format so as to remove that complaint from the complainers.

No they'd find something else to complain about. There is no know cure for complainicitis.

The problem for B&N is that they have implemented geo-restrictions by putting an IP check on their payment page. You can only pay if you have an USA IP-address. This is the reason all e-books are USA-only, even those available worldwide.
This is also the reason you cannot buy books from the B&N store outside the USA, but are allowed to download books already bought.
Of course if you have access to a PC or laptop you can use an USA VPN or proxy to buy the books, and than you can use the Nook to download them.

Amazon has solved this problem by using different Kindle stores for different regions. Fictionwise has registered geo-restrictions per book.

Perhaps we will see a change when they switch to the Epub version of their bookstore (I expect we will see lower prices and more choice then).

It's a clever name actually. Forget the slang and hit up a regular dictionary instead. Nook is a small space or corner, often used to store things.

We all know what a "nook" is. The problem is that the word is associated more with the slang than not.

Beyond any other issues that amazon faced with the kindle, b&n also have a fairly major disadvantage when it comes to launching internationally in that they have no actual presence outside north america.

Assuming the profit margin on the nook itself isn't bad then the combination of epub support and wifi would allow b&n to build up a userbase while they worked to setup international sales, but at the same time their hardware would be helping rival bookstores.
