Answering the original questions:
No ePaper display is ever likely to have a "backlight" as by the very definition, these displays are designed to be opaque. They could have an illuminated display though (like pre-digital watches had). But for now, just use a little usb led book light. The Irex DR1000 series ready are the first ever to fully and correctly display almost any PDF without modification. I say "almost" because I have noticed some slight distortion of musical notation when I display unmodified sheet music, but this it totally resolved by running the PDF through PDFCropper. |

FBreader, an open source reader that supports CHM and other formats has been ported to the Dr1000 and works well. The author reported the port as "very easy".
