OK less flippant response. A preference is simply what you like best. A moral is what you believe is the best way to live in the world. We might believe differently what is the best way, but it isn't just what we like best. I might like one thing best but choose to do something else due to my feelings on what is the moral choice. However, this is getting even further off topic than it was before.

The Google definition of morals:
Quote:
To one person it could be a moral act to save all stray cats in their neighborhood - to another they could look at a cat and say "mmmm, dinner". (Not me, I like cats, but I've been to places in the world where that is exactly the case). To get in an argument over whether or not an action is performed on a moral basis is ridiculous because no one can say it isn't - they can only say it isn't for them. To each his own. Cheers, |

In some communities eating cat or horse is not just acceptable but encouraged. In others facilitating it is downright illegal. Different communities, different mores.

Isn't that just cultural and nothing to do with morals?

A culture can help one define their morals. A group of people with the same morals over an extended period can create a culture. At least that's how I understand it.
People who live in a particular culture could develop a different moral stance and "rebel"... |

No, as I understand the definition, morals are directly tied to your culture's expectations of what is correct behavior.
Ethics are the reasoning and codification behind that behavior. http://www.dailywritingtips.com/ethics-vs-morals/ On a related note, integrity, as I see it, is consistency and steadfastness in the application of ethics and morals. |

fjtorres was talking about "mores" not morals - related but possibly different...or not. Shall we have a heated debate about that?

Morals are, it can be argued, universal whilst mores are not. However, the point was that the respondents above seem to have misread fjtorres' contribution and I was simply pointing that out. Are you maintaining that there is actually no difference between mores and morals Harry, and that therefore the misreading, if that's what it is, makes no difference? |

I just got the news that my favorite brick and mortar book store, which I had thought was getting by in a well-protected niche, is going out of business.
Honestly, I don't know what the future holds any more. |

It turns out that their landlord simply wanted to rent the space out to someone else for more money, so they lost their lease.
The going-out-of-business sale is ongoing, they are in there until April. The store owner hopes to liquidate his stock, take some much-needed time off, and figure out what to do next. |
