The reason is probably that they are forced to do it if they want to use the DRM system. Also since the MobiPocket format is secret (probably not specified at all and defined by what the common code from MobiPocket can handle) they cannot write there own code.

Yeah. It's "secret". Unh-hunh. Sure.

Legally, it probably is, but technically, it's probably one of the most 'open' secrets around. I believe if it weren't for the aggressive legal protection done by Mobipocket, we'd have dozens of black-box implementations of the DRM'd version floating around - in a matter of weeks.

Please send me the specification for the meta format of a MobiPocket file then. You cannot do that because all details are not known and I suspect there does not exist a specification at all. What exists is one implementation.
