Kubrick: Live CD to debrick Kindle 3, 4, and Touch

Just to make sure I understood the instructions correctly. Kindle 4NT. When speaking about the 5-way down button you mean the "big" button in the middle of the Kindle. And "down" means the side that is pointing towards the "end" of the Kindle (where the power button is)?

Ok, i have tried again today to boot from CD Rom but got the same as when tried wit Dvd come up saying

Boot from CD:
Not boot device available, press enter to retry
Sata-0: Installed
Sata 1: Installed
Sata 4: Installed
Sata 5: None

With the Usb stick i just got Boot error

any help would be appreciated thank you

That depends on the PC you are trying to boot with the CD/DVD -
And you included no information about your PC or the settings of its BIOS.

Translation: Impossible to answer.

Hi sorry its Dell PC running Windows Vista bios is set to boot from hard disk, but changed it to boot from CD Rom when trying to boot

Anybody who can help? Seriously, I feel like an idiot asking that. But I cannot access the USB downloader mode. Am I doing anything wrong? I follow exactly the steps that are listed in Kubrick. Is there a specific amount of time I have to wait for each step when activating USB downloader mode? Is there anything I did not recognize? Any help is gladly appreciated!

Yes, the DOWN button is the button at the bottom of the 5-way controller ("south" button, if that makes more sense). Make sure that you are following the instructions *exactly*, i.e.

- press and hold the power button until the LED turns off.
- keep the power button pressed, and in addition, press the "down" button.
- release the power button.
- release the "down" button.

Unless your Kindle has some kind of hardware defect (like the down button not working at all), this *does* work, and *will* put the device into USB downloader mode.

Thx for verifying! I do exactly as written by you. But Kubrick doesn't give me any feedback. It's waiting for the device and nothings happening anymore... But I keep on trying and keep my fingers crossed that the problem is in front of the computer. :-)

It worked. Problem was the computer... For some reason it didn't recognized the Kindle properly. I tried it with another machine. It worked without any problem. Thx so much for your support!

kubrick is really helpful, useful and convenient tool.
But... After debricking (kubrick wrote that kindle NT is debricked) Kindle started to reload and error message about Repair.
What is wrong and how it can be cured?

Err... more need a bit more information than you have provided to "guess"

Did you mangle the FAT system files? Isn't there like 2 extra options to cover such eventualities?

Zero the re-try counter in /var/local

Select the option to delete the internal partition in Kubrick - this will lose all settings (but not the documents).

Or, if you're an advanced user, you can SSH in (while in diags) and delete the /var/local/upstart/lab126_gui.restarts file, as knc1 suggested. The next version of Kubrick will do that automatically, but that version isn't ready yet.

EDIT: /var/local/upstart/lab126_gui.restarts is for the Kindle Touch - the correct file on the K4 is /var/local/system/.framework_reboots.
