picture problem
I have a strange conversion problem using calibre to convert HTML created by Word.
When converting to Mobi - then viewed - it takes one of the photos in the document, blows it up, and it is visible at the top when viewed. I am using the PC viewer for Kindle that is supplied by Amazon. The HTML and document are clean and I see no obvious reason for this. Has anyone else had this problem or know of a solution? |

This is probably the source of the problem.
You should check the HTML by first viewing it in a browser and then editing the HTML code. A number of things may be happening. The image in question may have been "resized" in Word resulting in a full size image being exported with the HTML having some sizing applied. It may be that this is done in a way the calibre fails to support. If so the large image wouldn't be scaled down to the design size in the resulting MOBI. If this is the cause, one fix would be to use an image editor to resize the image to the desired pixel size. Alternately, you could alter the HTML for the <IMG> tag replacing Word's sizing with simple WIDTH=xxPX and HEIGHT=xxPX pixel sizes to achieve the desired display size. The first "fix" results in the more compact file size in the resulting MOBI conversion. The latter yields a better display if the user clicks on the image to display it full screen. BTW, you don't specify the viewer you're using accurately. The viewer you should be using is "Kindle Previewer", which is what I'm hoping you are using. Amazon also provides "Kindle for PC", along with versions for other OSs. Preview is the better choice for proofing conversions. |

thanks but that doesn't quite solve it...
The viewer is Kindle for PC.
The photo is not resized - it is a solid 300x400dpi - and the photo is about the 3rd out of 7 photos in the document. The photo in question not only appears large and grainy - it also appears out of order and at the top as the first thing. I looked at the HTML coding and see no reason for it to appear anywhere but where it is supposed to apper - which is near the middle page of about 9 pages. Any further ideas? I appreciate your help...but this is frustrating! Bob Last edited by sttork; 06-20-2012 at 09:40 PM. |

You seem to imply that it is showing up on the first page.
Have you disabled Calibre from trying to generate a cover for the document? It often grabs the first image and throws it onto the front page as the cover(large). |
