Some of you guys crack me up with always telling others to just read the Classics for free. If you are interested in them that's just fine, but if not....
As for formatting, the DN certainly doesn't have a monopoly on poorly formatted books. I very rarely come across publishers books that are done well. And what really galls me is they have the nerve to charge full price for these slapped together ebooks! |

Here is my advice. BEFORE you buy any ereader:
Now you have an idea of what downloading or creating your own ebooks is like and you don't even have to buy a reader. With the internet - you can spend YEARS downloading and creating ebooks - all legally and royalty free. Some suggested sites: http://www.classicreader.com/ ASSTR.org http://www.fuelyourwriting.com/46-si...-of-all-types/ (These are all free and legal to read or download - and this is barely scratching the surface). For commercial books - check out Inkmesh as a ebook search engine. It tends to show you where to get the best prices. |

thank you. I pretty much thought I was the only lowbrow here devoted to spending hours of her life reading useless and and moronic carp. Classics? Bah. They made me read those in school. Really it all comes down to how married you are to what books you want to read. There are tons of free eBooks. There are even tons of free legally obtained eBooks. If you are open to reading what is available for free legally, then you'll find enough free to never have to buy a book again. But if the books you absolutely have to read come with a price tag and your library doesn't have them on Overdrive .... then the only legal thing to do is pay. |

When I was at school everyone was reading Richard Allen books and The Rats by James Herbert. The teachers used to confiscate them and make us read stuff abour mockingbirds and something about some Roman geezer that gets stabbed.

Why are we automatically assuming that he's out to break the law and finding the big nerf bats?
Yes there's sites, also torrent sites with great current books and authors that most of us would want to read. Baen was pointed out, Gutenberg, Obooko, freefictions and here. There's also a filesharing site that specializes in DRM free books from the public domain. While the poster may have wanted a free ride or not, why not take the opportunity as others in this thread to point people towards some of the many lovely free ressources on the net, while fighting against copyright lobbiest being able to continually extending the copyrights. |
