James White- Sector General

In the Robot books by Wesley Allison the character of Mike Smith likes to read the Sector General novels by James White. They are real novels, and in fact are available in omnibus editions through Amazon. Has anyone here at MR read them? If so, what did you think of them?

I read them as a teenager and in paper. It was so long ago I do not remember much about them. I did like them as a teenager.

Read them all when I was in school. Re-read them all about 5 years (or so) ago. Love the creative biological classifications. Also several of the recurring non-human characters were really smarmy. Loved the humor. I'd strongly recommend getting your hands on these books if you haven't read them.

Excellent books, and perhaps the best example of a pacifist space opera ever written. None of the problems are solved through conflict.

James White was a superb and much-missed writer.

Unfortunately none is the series is available in ebook form in the UK.

It's always that way one way or the other isn't it? Either a book (or a collection of books) is available in the UK and not in the US or vice versa. You have to wonder why sometimes.

No, not always. It generally occurs when a book has different UK and US publishers.

Well sometimes it seems to happen quite a bit. I take your point about the publishers though. What can be really confusing is when the title changes depending on the country where a book is published. Agatha Christie's books come to mind as a prime example. A lot of her books seem to have two different titles depending on if a copy was through the English or American publisher's. I have no idea if James White's books have title changes of the same sort or not.

I'm sorry I missed this thread in June. The Sector General novels are one of my favorite SF novels series. I have, I hope, all the pb's from years ago, along with other James White novels that I hoped were Sector General, but were just stand alone novels.

I started looking for them when ebooks came out. The Tor site has four of the anthologies, which I bought. There were two other's I did not know about, but Tor has not provided them on ebooks. I keep checking every so often.

It was mentioned in this thread that Amazon has them, but doesn't that mean AZT/MOBI? I'll check that out just to see what they have.

Glad others enjoy the Sector General peaceful life.
