There are multiple menus; adding the Plugin to the standard Library menu does NOT change the menu displayed when you have a device attached.

Go to Preferences | Toolbar. At the top you will see Main Toolbar. Click on that and you can select alternate toolbars to customize.

Finding attached device requires restarting Calibre

Thanks PereT; that solved half of my problem. The other question is that when Caliber is running and you attach iPad, is it normal that you need to restart Calibre to be able to see the device in the menu bar and be able to transfer books to it? That is what happens in my case. When I connect the ipad it is not detected right away and restart of Calibre is necessary.

Thanks

No, iPad is the only one that is attached to the PC. I used to use a kindle before, but it is a while that I do not use it.

I don't have an iPad so I may be off base, but since the recommended (read supported) method of transferring your books to the iPad is via iTunes it doesn't really matter if your iPad is detected or not. You shouldn't be attemping to transfer books directly to your iPad.

Do as PeterT suggested and read the Calibre + Apple iDevices: Start here sticky post for details.

In fact if you use the recommended method of transfering via Connect to iTunes, then you should have the Apple device driver disabled in Calibre so that it never get picked up directly.

True enough, here is step three from the Start here guide.

Quote:
Launch calibre, set Preferences:
  • Preferences|Behavior|Preferred output format to EPUB
  • Preferences|Conversion|common options|page setup|Output profile to iPad
  • Preferences|Plugins|Device Interface plugins|Apple device interface - click Enable/Disable plugin so that driver is disabled (grayed out). This makes it possible to use the 'Connect to iTunes' method described below. It is still possible to customize the plugin, as these settings are shared among the various Apple device drivers.
