Agency pricing at Amazon high?

I'm sure various aspects of agency pricing have been discussed ad-nauseum. But I am left with a question that I'm unable to find an answer to. Why are agency priced books so much more expensive at Amazon than Nook or Kobo? I thought the whole idea, from publishers perspective, is that if they fix the price, e-book stores wont get in a price war that only the largest player can win, (with loss leaders etc.).

However, for example, Neat Stephenson Reamde:

Amazon Kindle: $16.96 ("Price set by publisher")
B&N Nook and Kindle: $14.99

This has bee the same pattern on all of a dozen or so books I've compared recenly. Amazon price is $1 to $2 higher on so called agency priced books.

Doesn't amazon add a $2 surcharge to outside the USA orders?

It probably has more too do with the exchange rate. U.S dollar v/s Canadian dollar , the two prices will not be the same for the same worth or value.

Maybe 15-20 years ago. For the last couple of years, our Dollars have been within $0.05 of par of each other (as of about 3 hours ago, the CAD was worth under a penny less than the USD).

Depending on the publisher, Amazon prices may include Canadian taxes. At Kobo, taxes are added in at POS. See:http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custom...?nodeId=468512

Not for Canada that I have seen. Some prices for Canada are higher, but I think that's more a function of the publisher at that point.

I get charged exchange rate anyway. The usual difference in the past with paper books has been because distribution inside Canada is just more costly (with e-books this is less of an issue) and I think the publishers are just milking Canadians' penchant to pay more for all it is worth.
