Is there any way to control a user's permission to modify the contents of certain columns? I maintain a single library used by multiple people and I generally do not want them to able to modify the library. However, it would be very useful to be able to define a column (perhaps a column of codes telling the user that he's read or wants to read a particular book) that only one user can write to, perhaps a password-protected column.

Or is there some other way to achieve the same end?

There is no specific protection in the main Calibre program of the type you specify.

A possible solution might be for everyone but yourself to access the library via the Calibre Content server as that provides read-only access. It does mean the others using network access to get books rather than a USB connection, but that may not be a bad thing?

No. Allowing multiple users access at the same time could cause database problems.

Not to the extent that you would like. You can limit possible database problems by having the other users grab books from calibre via the Content Server web interface. The users will not be able to modify the database at all but will be able to easily download books.
