Quote:
You hold in your hands not a book at all, but a terrifying embodiment of purest evil. Can you feel the electric tingle in your fingers as you are absorbed by the demon Jakabok's tale of his unintentional ascent from the depths of the Inferno? Do you sense the cold dread worming its way into your bloodstream, your sinews, the marrow of your bones as you read more deeply into his earthly education and unspeakable acts? The filth you now grasp has been waiting patiently for you for nearly six hundred years. And now, before you are completely in its thrall, you would do well to follow the foul creature's admonition and destroy this abomination of ink and paper before you turn a single leaf and are lost forever.

You have been warned.

999: New Stories of Horror and Suspense for $1.99.

A ward-winning writer and editor Al Sarrantonio gathers together twenty-nine original stories from masters of the macabre. From dark fantasy and pure suspense to classic horror tales of vampires and zombies, 999 showcases the extraordinary scope of fantastical fright fiction. Quote:
The “zombie apocalypse,” once on the fringes of horror, has become one of the most buzzworthy genres in popular culture. Now, in Plague of the Dead, Z.A. Recht delivers an intelligent, gripping thriller that will leave both new and die-hard zombie fans breathless.
The end begins with a viral outbreak unlike anything mankind has ever encountered before. The infected are subject to delirium, fever, a dramatic increase in violent behavior, and a one-hundred percent mortality rate. But it doesn’t end there. The victims return from death to walk the earth. When a massive military operation fails to contain the living dead it escalates into a global pandemic. In one fell swoop, the necessities of life become much more basic. Gone are petty everyday concerns. Gone are the amenities of civilized life. Yet a single law of nature remains: Live, or die. Kill, or be killed. On one side of the world, a battle-hardened general surveys the remnants of his command: a young medic, a veteran photographer, a brash Private, and dozens of refugees, all are his responsibility—*all thousands of miles from home. Back in the United States, an Army colonel discovers the darker side of Morningstar virus and begins to collaborate with a well-known journalist to leak the information to the public...and the Morningstar Saga has begun.

Quote:
If you have a supernatural problem that won't go away, you need Buck Carlsbad: private eye, exorcist, and last resort.

Buck's got a way with spirits that no one else can match. He was normal, once. Until Something Horrible killed his parents and left him for dead.

Buck has spent years using his gift to trace his family. It's his only hope of finding out what happened to them-and what made him the way he is.

Now the voices say that something big is coming. Buck already knows what it is-a super high-tech bullet train running express across a stretch of unforgiving desert known for the most deadly paranormal events in history. A place where Buck almost died a few years ago, and where he swore he would never return.

But as the train prepares to rumble down the tracks, Buck knows it can only be the inevitable hand of fate pulling him back to the most harrowing unfinished case of his career at four hundred miles per hour.

Free short story by Ramsey Campbell - The Long Way.

Also free in Mobi and EPUB formats as a zipped file from the publisher's website:

Quote:
This horror novelette was originally published in 2008 as a PS Holiday Hardcover Chapbook for subscribers to the award winning to Postscripts magazine.
http://www.pspublishing.co.uk/the-lo...bell-834-p.asp

The only description I could find was from someone's blog, so I'll just quote a little here:

Quote:
THE LONG WAY is about a boy who walks to his wheelchair-bound uncles’ retirement village every Saturday to help him buy groceries. His route takes him past a section of housing that has been vacated due to its proximity to a wooded area frequented by criminals. Through the doorway of one of those abandoned houses, the boy notices an obscured figure that seems to be leaning forward on sticks. There’s something unnatural about the way it keeps moving incrementally closer to the open portal each time he passes.

Like with everything Campbell writes, the atmosphere is charged with potential menace...

Please note that if you go to the PS Publishing site to download The Long Way, click on the eTales tab at the top and you'll notice that all eight of their eTales are currently free including four by Peter Crowther who never disappoints.

I'm hopeless with posting links so if anyone wants to throw them up here to make it easier for people, feel free.

Book I – Dr. Phibes: The first book of the Dr. Phibes horror classic series. Here the good doctor seeks revenge for the death of his beautiful wife, Victoria Regina Phibes. The victims are murdered horribly and grotesquely; and each are killed as part of a bizarre ritual based on the ten curses of the old Testament.

Book III - Dr. Phibes In The Beginning: The third book tells the origins of the phantom-phantastic and exactly how Dr. Phibes became who he is, of the enigmatic Victoria Regina Phibes and those wonderful and wondrous ‘Clockwork Wizards’, and what the good doctor is doing right now, as well as providing a crucial clue as to where he will appear next. ‘Dr. Phibes: In The Beginning' is simultaneously and stunningly both a classic love story that has been tempered by horrific tragedy as well as a classic horror story borne from that ultimate of all human emotions – love.

Boggy Creek: The Legend Is True by Eric S. Brown and Jennifer Mynar-Jaynes (who wrote the screenplay) is a free novella based on the movie.

Quote:
When Jennifer's father dies in a horrific accident, she finds herself drawn to his small cabin in Boggy Creek, Texas. She brings a few friends along for a week's stay, but their vacation soon turns deadly.
The Summer I Died by Ryan C. Thomas is $4.99 at Amazon and B&N,Sony.Kobo (less with any coupon available).

Quote:
So much screaming.

Roger Huntington is home from college for the summer, and he and his best friend, Tooth, can’t wait to start having fun. It’s going to be a summer full of beer, comic books, movies, laughs, parties and maybe even girls.

So much pain.

The sun is high and the sky is clear as Roger and Tooth set out to shoot beer cans at Bobcat Mountain. Just two friends catching up on lost time, two friends thinking about their futures, two friends—

So much blood.

—suddenly thrust in the middle of a nightmare. Forced to fight for their lives against a sadistic killer. A killer with an arsenal of razor-sharp blades and a hungry dog.

So much death.

If they are to survive, they must decide: are heroes born, or are they made? Or is something more powerful happening to them? And more importantly, how do you survive when all roads lead to . . . death!
Per the reviews this is supposed to be very gory but with good story and character development.

Premier Digital Publishing is offering three Robert Masello titles for $.99 each:

The Spirit Wood

Quote:
IT WAS SUBLIME, EROTIC, EVIL. IT WAS THE CALL OF HIS OWN BLOOD…

When Peter Constantine inherited a vast, remote estate, his life began to change. Free at last from money worries, Peter and his wife, Meg, could relax – and Peter could explore his new, mysterious home. From the thick woods, the winding trails, the bizarre, sensual sculpture, came a pulsing, ancient call that stirred his very depths. Then he heard the music, and saw the beautiful woman who beckoned him into the woods…into an ancient ritual, a blood curse, a world of violent, unbridled lust.

Now his wife no longer knows him. Now Peter is transformed…into a pagan creature, driven by the suffocating need of animal desire…until pleasure is not enough, and no evil is forbidden, in…THE SPIRIT WOOD.
Black Horizon

Quote:
The gates between life and death have been opened. Musician Jack Logan holds the key. In the streets of New York he brought a man back from the dead – in plain and shocking sight of a TV news camera crew. Now the whole world is aware of his miraculous power. The media wants to expose him, the scientists to exploit him. But worst of all, the tortured souls of the dead – including his own mother – are reaching out from the void, luring him over into the eternal domain, transforming his gift into the ultimate curse. Living or dead, they struggle to seize and control the secret that lies beyond the . . . BLACK HORIZON.
Private Demons

Quote:
EVERYONE HIDES A SECRET FROM THE PAST...…but Lucien’s secret is inescapable. A living thing that has followed him across the world, from the horrors of Southeast Asia to the penthouse suites of the rich and famous. EVERYONE CRAVES MONEY, POWER, AND SEX…but Lucien can satisfy his every urge, every decadent impulse, every erotic whim – for a price. EVERYONE HAS PRIVATE DEMONS…but Lucien’s demon is all too real. All too powerful. All too hungry…for human souls.
A few more horror freebies from Robert W. Walker:

Final Edge (Edge Series #4)

Quote:
The body of a young woman is found--piece by piece. The ghastly mementos are being delivered to Detective Lucas Stonecoat and psychiatrist Dr. Meredyth Sanger, signaling the beginning of a gruesome game. But who's playing it? Why? And how far will it go next?

Arthur and Lauralie are an average couple--in every way but one. In the privacy of their isolated farm, they share a taste for the macabre. Utterly devoted to each other, they'll do anything--to anyone--to keep their love alive. Now they're engaging another couple in love to play along...

But how close to the edge of madness are Lucas and Meredyth willing to go to survive?
Vampire Dreams (Bloodscreams #1)

Quote:
DEATH STALKS THE NIGHT...

Andover is a quiet town. No screams disturb its slumber, although perhaps they should--when the bones of the dead are taken form their graces, and the residents begin to disappear...

But who could guess that behind the walls of a local hospital, a cult of inhuman bloodsuckers lurk and feed and fiendishly devise a new defense against their ancient weakness? When modern medicine teams with undead evil, only one man can stop it.

...AND NOW IT STALKS THE DAY

Abraham Stroud is many things: archeologist, psychic, and detective. But more than that, he's a man who sees past the deceptive reality of everyday life, into the dark shadows where the horrors of myth and nightmare dwell. His is a lonely battle against monsters no one else dares to believe in.

But you don't have to believe in vampires for them to tear you apart...
Children of Salem

Quote:
INTRIGUE, SUSPENSE, AND ROMANCE IN THE TIME OF THE SALEM WITCH TRIALS

A spy working for religious organizations, Jere Wakely is summoned to Salem Village Parish, where it has become obvious to church authorities that there is serious trouble.

He is reluctant to return to his hometown for many reasons, not the least being that his heart is broken and he's worried about running into his former lover, Serena Nurse.

During his investigation, he has no expectation that their love will be rekindled. But their renewed passion parallels a greater fire--one of terror amid the infamous Salem Witch Trials.

A witch hunt in this important election year of 1692 is backdrop to a romance filled with intrigue and mystery; the history is accurate, and the truth is disturbing yet fascinating.

Free preorder story for 10/30: City of Screams by James Rollins and Rebecca Cantrell.

Quote:
From New York Times bestselling author James Rollins and award-winning suspense novelist Rebecca Cantrell comes a disturbing story of vengeance, bloodshed, and creatures that prowl the night.

In the haunted, war-torn highlands of Afghanistan, amid the ruins of Shahr-e-Gholghol, an archaeology team is massacred in the night. Sergeant Jordan Stone and his crack forensic team are called in to examine the site, to hunt for the perpetrators of this horrific act. But the discovery of a survivor—a child of ten—will shatter all the team knows about life and death. Among the crumbling bones of dead kings, something hoary and murderous stirs out of the ancient past, lurching forward to claim vengeance on those still living.

Included with this thrilling story is a sneak peek at The Blood Gospel, where the further exploits of Sergeant Stone and his team will be revealed.
Free from Permuted Press: The Estuary by Derek Gunn.

Quote:
Journalist John Pender has returned to his home town of Whiteshead to rekindle his marriage. Ex-British Intelligence Officer Dave Johnson has arrived to isolate himself after his fiancée is murdered during a mission that went terribly wrong. But excavations for the new shopping centre unearth a mysterious contagion that threatens to throw their lives into chaos. Now the residents of Whiteshead are trapped within a quarantine zone with the military on one side and ravenous hordes on the other. Escape is no longer an option. Far out in the mouth of the estuary a small keep sits forlornly surrounded by an apron of jagged rocks. This refuge has always been unassailable, a place of myth and legend that has grown in folklore through the years. Now, it's the survivors' only hope of sanctuary. But there are thousands of flesh-eating infected between them and the keep and time is running out ...

Dear NightBird:

Wow!

Seven people absolutely hated "The Estuary."

I still picked it up, NightBird, for which I thank you.

Apparently, the book is riddled with typos and involves stupid people. As one reviewer claims (paraphrasing), doesn't anything ever happen to smart people? Well, I'm all for dumb people, especially if they're dumb and they turn into dumb zombies. Hey! I ask you: What's wrong with being dumb? Aren't we all just a little bit dumb? On the inside, I mean.

As mentioned, the bok is riddled with typesos. Hey! I ass you: What's wrong with typos? Arent' they an Indiapanposliss writers' best friend? Without typesos, where wood an INdy writher be?

So: Give me more typos and more dumb people. And I'll be one happy redneck reader.

Sincerely yours,
Dr. Drib

My thoughts are: I'm surprised about the typos because I didn't see any in the description.

Dumb zombies are better than smart zombies.

There can only be stupid characters in horror books - I think it's a law or something.

Here's another free zombie book - White Flag of the Dead by Joseph Talluto from Severed Press.

Quote:
White Flag of the Dead: Book 1 Surrender of the Living.
Millions died when the Enillo Virus swept the earth. Millions more were lost when the victims of the plague refused to stay dead, instead rising to slay and feed on those left alive. For survivors like John Talon and his son Jake, they are faced with a choice: Do they submit to the dead, raising the white flag of surrender? Or do they find the will to fight, to try and hang on to the last shreds or humanity?

Surrender of the Living is the first high octane installment in the White Flag of the Dead series.
In Dracula's Time by Matt Cutugno is free from Stay Thirsty Press.

Quote:
The never-before told story of an ancient biography of Vlad the Impaler, written in the 15th century, and how it inspired Bram Stoker’s creation of Dracula. IN DRACULA’S TIME tells of the author’s chance meetings in the autumn of 1969 with an old man who actually met with Bram Stoker on several occasions, just prior to his death in 1912. Hidden from view for almost a century, author Matt Cutugno reveals for the first time the old man’s story of Stoker’s secret trip to the land of the vampires and the source for his creation of the legendary Count Dracula.

Doug Backus is a normal young man trying to lead a clean Christian life but when mysterious and gruesome deaths begin occurring in his town of Clover, Kentucky, he learns that his life can never be as wholesome as he wants. Along with his heathen friend Crank and pariah neighbor Whitney, he becomes involved in an exploration of the town's secrets that will either lead them to their doom or answer all the questions Doug has about almost everything. Only one thing becomes certain: Salvation is not an option.
