I won't have much time for 'real' reading, so most of mine will be audiobooks while I work.. And I definitely won't hit 100 books..

1. Douglas Niles & Mary Kirchoff - Dragonlance Preludes volume 5: Flint The King (Audiobook) 3/5.
-Fantasy. Only for people that have read the Dragonlance Chronicles first. Light reading, but I really like the world..

2. Barbara & Scott Siegel - Dragonlance Preludes volume 6: Tanis, The Shadow Years (Audiobook) 3/5.
-Same as above.

3. Margaret Weis - Raistlin Chronicles: The Soulforge (Audiobook) 5/5.
-Same as above.

4. Neal Stephenson - Snow Crash. 3/5
-Science fiction, although it covers a lot of genres.. It was okay. Had a bit of a hard time following all the plots sometimes.

5. Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickmann - Dragonlance: The Chaos War (Audiobook) 5/5.
-One of my favorites..

6. Philip Pullman - The Golden Compass. 4/5.
-A nice audiobook, but a bit slow at times. But it has some elements that I really liked, and as an Audiobook it is one of the best productions I've heard. The author himself read it, and they had the best actors to speak the characters I've ever heard.

7. Eoin Colfer - Artemis Fowl. 3/5
- A bit weird book, and definitely for the younger readers I would say. Set in a world which is somewhat different from your normal fantasy book world, but I'm not really sure I like it. He basically takes faires, dwarfs, trolls, give them high tech technology, puts them in the earths core, and says humans know nothing about them, even though they mingle with humans/surface dwellers all the time. I'll try the next book and see if I like it, but I'm a bit pessimistic, since it doesn't really mix well in my opinion..

Here are my 2011 books.
My rating system works like this:

= the book is a turd, avoid at all costs
= not sure what to make of it
= okay book
= good book, recommended
= great book, highly recommended

= reading in progress

Click on the book's title in bold to be redirected to the relevant page on your favorite evil book distributor's site.
------------------------------

#001 - - Isaac Asimov - Gold
338 pages
An excellent read and a page-turner, as always with anything Asimov. If you're an aspirant writer, the second half of the book will give you great advices to get your started - Jan 1, 2011
ISBN: 978-0061054099

#002 - - Mark Twain - The Mysterious Stranger and Other Stories
110 pages
Great, deceptively simple stories; Mark Twain is the master of irony - Jan 1, 2011
ISBN: 978-1438533827

#003 - - Hunter S. Thompson - Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream
143 pages
A fantastic book that chronicles the demotion of the purposeful hippie drug usage into senseless hard drug binging at the end of the sixties, and the death of the American dream. A unique story written in H.S. Thompson's inimitable gonzo style - Jan 2, 2011
ISBN: 978-0679785897

#004 - - Iain M. Banks - Transition
399 pages
A great novel, but harder to get into than most Iain M. Banks (SF) books. The several intertwined stories are a bit disconnected, and the various narrators aren't clearly identifiable, but all these sub-plots converge to create a great ending. In short, you'll have to work to enjoy the last 50 pages - Jan 4, 2011
ISBN: 978-0316071994

Post VANDY's Books Read in 2011

Hello, All.

What a wonderful Idea to have a book reading challenge for 2011. I'm certainly excited about participating and will use this post to keep track of the books I've read.

I am going to use Fastolfe's rating system as I believe it to be quite nice and graphically informative. The rating system is shown below.

= the book is a turd, avoid at all costs
= not sure what to make of it
= okay book
= good book, recommended
= great book, highly recommended
= reading in progress

Further, I am going to use a modification of wcherrybomb's method of detailing the books I've read.

On to the list...

Book #1
Rating:
Title: 1632
Author: Eric Flint
Pages: 504
Genre: Science Fiction
Review: Outstanding book! One of the best SciFi reads I've enjoyed in years. Mr. Flint is an excellent author and has a writing style that paints vivid mind pictures. I found myself drawn into the story and becoming one of the players. I highly recommend this book.

Book #2
Rating:
Title: Hero (The Cat Star Chronicles, Book 6)
Author: Cheryl Brooks
Pages: 365
Genre: Science Fiction Romance (Mature)
Review: Even though I'm an "old fart", I've got to admit this is the first time I've read a Science Fiction Romance book. I thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Brooks approach to her subject matter and even found the explicit parts interesting to read. It certainly makes one wonder what alien sex life might be like... I would certainly recommend this good book.

Book #3
Rating:
Title: 1633
Author: Eric Flint
Pages: 608
Genre: Science Fiction
Review:

As I finish and / or start more books, I'll edit this post. Good reading to all!

Regards,

Books read in 2011: (Moved over from Social Groups)
Undead and Unwed by MaryJanice Davidson - Similar to the True Blood series, girl dies, turns into vampire, finds out she has vampire super powers, becomes vampire queen. It was a fun read and I will read more in the series for a good, lighthearted read.

Orchid Beach by Stuart Woods - Murder mystery. Female officer retires from Army after failed sexual harassment case, joins police force in Orchid Beach where she works to solve the mystery of who shot the Chief the day she arrives into town. Waiting for second book in series to be available from library.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith - Classic book with a twist. Hard to read with the colloquial language structure but lots of fun when you include zombies. Never read the original but this version was a good read.

Portal by Imogen Rose - Girl wakes up thinking she is one person but the life she wakes up into is totally different. An intriguing book that kept me turning pages late into the night. She is an indie author and I would highly recommend this book to everyone.

Elvis and the Dearly Departed by Peggy Webb - Elvis has been reincarnated as a Hound Dog and is owned by a hairdresser who also does hair for the departed. A body goes missing and she and a cousin have many adventures trying to find the body and the stuff that happens afterwards. Another lighthearted murder mystery. I am looking forward to reading the next one in the series.

The Girl Who Played With Fire by Steig Larsson - 2nd book in "The Girl Who" series. Honestly, I liked the first one better. This one took awhile for me to get into the plot. Basic plot - Man is hired by Millennium magazine to publish a book on the sex trade that his girlfriend has been researching. Man and his girlfriend are killed along with Lisbeth Salandar's appointed guardian. Lots of twists and turns.

Speak No Evil by Allison Brennan - Psycho killer on the loose in San Diego. A man is kidnapping women and killing them. They are found with a gag glued to their mouth. Cop and sheriff/brother of a suspect look for the killer. Pretty formulaic murder mystery but was still a good read.

Books in Progress:

Pocket Peace by Allen Lokos
Total Control by David Badacci
Official Book Club by Kathy Griffin
Beer - Tap into the Art and Science of Brewing by Charles Bamforth

To be read
The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest by Steig Larson
Huckleberry Finished by Livia Washburn
The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks
True Magick by Amber K
Queen of Babble by Meg Cabot
The Book of Wisdom by Osho
The Perfect Woman by James Andrus

12/ Tuck Everlasting
author: Natalie Babbitt
Rate it 5/5 for an easy-to-read children book.

13/ S@motność w Sieci (Lonliness on the Net)
author: Janusz Leon Wiśniewski
I wasn't seriously reading this, so can't say anything about it.

14/ Godfather * (translation)
author: Mario Puzo
* a paperback edition.

15 - 18/ His Dark Materials series, including:
  1. the Golden Compass
  2. the Subtle Knife
  3. the Amber Spyglass
  4. Lyra's Oxford
author: Philip Pullman

19 -> 21/ Immortal Sheikh series trilogy
including: Lord of the desert, Vampire Sheikh and Shadow of the Sheikh.
author: Nina Bruhns

22/ Beastly
author: Alex Flinn
3/5.

23 -> 27/ the Riyria Revelations series, including:

  2. Avempartha
  3. Nyphron Rising
  4. Emerald Storm
  5. Wintertide
  6. Percepliquis (coming in 2012)
author: Michael J. Sullivan

28/ A kiss in time
author: Alex Flinn
Rate it 2/5.

29/ The Princess Bride
author: William Goldman
The book is hilarious. Wonderful. I LOVE IT. I'll be generous on this: I give it 5/5.

30/ Three nights of sin
author: Anne Mallory
What a waste of time. 1/5.

31/ Không bao giờ là cuối * (roughly translated: "Never the last")
author: Xuân Quỳnh
This is a poetry, including many poems all well-known and un-known ones by Xuân Quỳnh, a favorite Vietnamese poet of mine. I rate this 3.5/5.
* this is a paperback edition.

32/ The Name of The Wind
author: Patrick Rothfuss

33-35/ Hunger Games series, containing:
  1. Hunger Games
  2. Catching Fire
  3. Mockingjay
author: Suzanne Collins

36/ The Red Pyramid (Kane Chronicles, #1)
author: Rick Riordan
I'm not impressed.

37/ The Lost Hero (Heroes of Olympus, #1)
author: Rick Riordan.

38/ The Book Thief
author: Markus Zusak
It's a terrific book.

39/ The Wise Man's Fear
author: Patrick Rothfuss
The series does improve, I think this book is better than its prequel.

40-43/ The Mortal Instruments series, including:
  1. City of Bones
  2. City of Ash
  3. City of Glass
  4. City of Fallen Angels

On "City of Fallen Angels": I read this just because I'd read the 3 books before it. Boring plots, but supported by a touch of humor now and then, it wasn't too bad.

44-50/ The Chronicles of Narnia, including:
  1. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe 4/5
  2. Prince Caspian 4/5
  3. Dawn Treader 3/5
  4. Silver Chair 2/5
  5. The Horse and His Boy
  6. Magician's Nephew 2/5
  7. The Last Battle

On "The Voyage of Dawn Treader":
Spoiler:
So this was the last book in which the Pevensies had major roles. I've moved on to "The Silver Chair" (haven't finished it yet) but I think I enjoy the Pevensies' adventures most. I like Edmund best though he was bad at the beginning, and when time comes he has a sharp tongue. Then, Lucy with her pure heart and Peter, the one who's protective and caring and brave. It's Susan whom I like least, she's vaguely built in the whole story.

Eustace came later and made an appearance in this book, and he'll come back in some books later on with his friend Jill (I must say I don't like them very much). And it's all for now, I'll update the review if some ideas strike my mind.

51-55/ Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, including:
  1. How to train your dragon
  2. How to be a pirate
  3. How to speak Dragonese
  4. How to cheat a dragon's curse
  5. How to twist a dragon's tale

56/ Red Riding Hood
authors: Sarah Blakely-Cartwright (and someone else whose name I forget)

Spoiler:
I enjoyed it at the beginning when small Valerie came out to the goat's place and saw the Wolf. From that on, reading was just for the sake of hoping things would get more exciting. Especially after the older sister died, I don't even remember her name, things got unbearable.

I couldn't understand why the authors lingered that much on such a nonsense detail of the death by one supporting character? Valerie's family and village agonized for what looked like a century for me. Pages after pages the authors went on describing how the living people missed that dead one. Sure losing someone you loved was overwhelming, that I knew, but by inserting "and Valerie thought of her poor sister who has that smile she loved" everywhere since her death, the authors were getting on my nerves. By talking so much about agony, they gave me the impression that what Valerie felt about her sister was fake. I was saying out loud, "PLEASE let's talk about other stuffs like the wolf and that mysterious Peter, whatever! STOP that nonsense!"

And there's something else. At the end of the book, they said something like, "if you want to know how this (crap) ends, go watch the movie". Now THAT caught me off guard. It's irritating, isn't it, when you pay for the book and in the end, figure out that you have to pay for the movie too if you wanna know the ending??

It's not neccessary to mention the fact that when it asked me to rate the book after finishing it, I gave it 1 star without second thought.

57/ Water for Elephants
author: Sarah Gruen

58/ A Game of Thrones
author: George R. R. Martin
It's a very complicated series, which hasn't been finished, by the way. 2/5. More info on the whole series in the "talk to me about Game of Thrones" thread.

59/ From Russia with Love, book no. 3
author: Ian Fleming
An interesting book I'm not into espionage but it's readable, almost as good as Casino Royale. 3/5.

60/ Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
author: Robert Louis Stevenson
No I didn't like it enough to finish it, and I'm sure I'll never come back to give it another go. Can't understand why it's considered classic. 1/5.

61/ Storm Front
author: Jim Butcher
The first book wasn't impressive as its praises. I'm reluctant to continue with Dresden Files. 1/5.

62/ Monster Hunter International
author: Larry Correia
After several boring ones I finally picked up MHI and was very satisfied. 4/5.

63/ Monster Hunter Vendetta
author: Larry Correia
After MHI, I simply had to read MHV. A great book for leisure reading.

64 - 66/ Charlie and the Chocolate Factory + Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator + Fantastic Mr. Fox
author: Roald Dahl, illustrator: Quentin Blake

67/ The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy
author: Douglas Adams

68/ The Restaurant At The End of The Universe
author: Douglas Adams

69/ Life, The Universe and Everything
author: Douglas Adams

70/ The Color of Magic (Discworld 1)
author: Terry Pratchett
I finished this book but knew next to nothing about the inside jokes, which made up 90% of its success. I think I would reread when I finish Jordan's books.

71/ Stardust
author: Neil Gaiman

72/ The Alchemist
author: Paulo Coelho

73/ Night Watch
author: Sergei Lukyanenko

Émile, ou de l'Éducation by Jean-Jacques Rousseau (hardback, translation.)

STILL READING BY THE END OF 2011:
A Tale of 2 Cities by Charles Dickens; and
Moby-Dick, by Herman Melville.

Final words: So it was 91/100. But I'm satisfied, because we had to read likecrazy at school, so 91% is acceptable.

  1. Nightwatch by Sergei Lukyanenko 464 pages 9/10
  2. Day Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko 453 pages 9/10
  3. Twilight Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko 416 pages 9/10
  4. Last Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko 384 pages 9/10

The Watch books are incredible, the translation from the original Russian is very well done. I wonder if all the references to western culture were in the original or if they were added by the translator. Either way, it makes the characters familiar and easily accessible. I would highly recommend them.
  5. American on Purpose: The Improbable Adventures of an Unlikely Patriot by Craig Ferguson 288 pages 9/10

A poignant and funny look at alcoholism, recovery, and rise to fame. An easy and fun read.
  6. The Descent by Jeff Long 592 pages 7/10

This book was great and I can’t wait to read the sequel, but Long seemed to make it unnecessarily hard to read. Point of view, and sometimes location, would change from one paragraph to the next with no indication for several paragraphs. I was expecting it to be, at least, 900 pages when I looked it up. It sure seemed like it. That said, I read it in two sittings.
  7. One for the Money by Janet Evanovich 334 pages 8/10

I enjoyed this and will continue with the series. I'm always leery when my mother recommends a series. She's not known for her great literary tastes, but this was a lot of fun to read.
  8. Country of the Blind by Christopher Brookmyre 416 pages 9/10

Very entertaining writer. Second Jack Parablane book. Just as good as the first.
  9. Deeper by Jeff Long 480 pages 7/10

Follow-up to The Descent. There is just something I don't like about his writing style.
  10. Atheism as a Positive Social Force by Raymond W. Converse 288 pages 8/10

Presents a case for Atheism as a basis for a modern moral code.
  11. Full Dark, No Stars by Stephen King 416 pages 9/10

Four novellas. Very dark and disturbing novellas. Very good novellas.
  12. Catch Me If You Can by Frank W. Abagnale 277 pages 9/10

Intriguing story. All true? He was a con man after all. Very enjoyable read.
  13. Kraken by China Mieville 528 pages 9/10

Good read. Interesting fantasy concept, Dark London Magic.
  14. Hell's Angels by Hunter S. Thompson 384 pages 9/10

Fascinating chronicle of Hunter's year observing the Angels in 1965.
  15. Star Island by Carl Hiaasen 528 pages 8/10

Chemo and the Captain finally meet. Good fun, but the ending was anticlimactic.
  16. World War Z by Max Brooks 352 pages (9/10)

I enjoyed this very much. World War Z is well written and very well conceived. The story is told after the fact, through interviewing survivors of a global zombie outbreak.
  17. Old Man's War by John Scalzi 320 pages (10/10)

Very enthralling story, well told, well paced, well conceived. Owes a great deal to Starship Troopers.
  18. The Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection from the Living Dead by Max Brooks 288 pages (7/10)

I found this to be a little slow, it wasn't until I got to the section on recorded attacks that I really began to enjoy reading it.
  19. Boneshaker by Cherie Priest 416 pages (9/10)

Very good story, I look forward to reading the next one.
  20. Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill 400 pages (10/10)

I gave it a 10 because it's his first offering and beautifully executed.
  21. The Strain by Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan 416 pages 9/10

    Vampire apocalypse... What fun!
  22. Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh 334 pages 9/10

Wow, much of it is written in Edinburgh dialect, but easier to read than I expected.
  23. Knots and Crosses by Ian Rankin 272 pages 9/10

The first of his Rebus books. Very enjoyable.
  24. The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson 447 pages 9/10

    Amazing.
  25. The Greatest Show on Earth by Richard Dawkins 496 pages 10/10

Dawkins presents incontrovertible proof of Evolution.
  26. The Fall by Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan 492 pages 9/10

    Vampire apocalypse continues... What fun!
  27. Tainted Blood by Arnaldur Indridason 352 pages (8/10)

Captivating murder mystery set in Iceland by an Icelandic author.
  28. Death of a Citizen by Donald Hamilton 142 pages 9/10

A little short for the list, but I figure that I've made up for it with other books. Good, tight thriller.
  29. The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove by Christopher Moore 309 pages 9/10

Fun and amusing second book in the Pine Cove series.
  30. The Ghost Brigades by John Scalzi 320 pages 9/10

Great follow-up to Old Man's War.
  31. Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk by David Sedaris 192 pages 8/10

    Interesting little book.
  32. Clementine by Cherie Priest 209 pages 9/10

    Steampunk fun
  33. The Burrowers Beneath by Brian Lumley 208 pages 8/10

Good old fashioned horror, like Grampa Lovecraft used to make.
  34. Nuclear Jellyfish by Tim Dorsey 288 pages 9/10

Serge is back and crazy as ever.
  35. If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor by Bruce Campbell 272 pages 8/10

Great insight on low budget film production.
  36. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter by Seth Grahame-Smith 336 pages 9/10

    Great historical fiction.
  37. Real Murders by Charlaine Harris 175 pages 7/10

    Fun little mystery.
  38. The Keep by F. Paul Wilson 403 pages 6/10

    Better than the movie.
  39. Death Check by Warren Murphy & Richard Sapir 192 pages 7/10

    Second Remo Williams book.
  40. Cup of Gold by John Steinbeck 240 pages 7/10

Not his best, but still a good pirate story.
  41. King Rat by China Mieville 320 pages 8/10

    Interesting.
  42. Doctor Who and an Unearthly Child by Terrence Dicks 128 pages 8/10

The novelization of the very first episode of Doctor Who.
  43. The Sad Tale of the Brothers Grossbart by Jesse Bullington 453 pages 8/10

    Surprisingly fun.
  44. The Stupidest Angel by Christopher Moore 306 pages 9/10

    More fun in Pine Cove.
  45. On Stranger Tides by Tim Powers 370 pages 8/10

Plundered to make the latest Pirates of the Carribean movie.
  46. The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark by Carl Sagan & Ann Druyan 480 pages 10/10

    Just read it.
  47. Damned by Chuck Palahniuk 247 pages 9/10

    Fun look at the afterlife.
  48. Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal by Christopher Moore 444 pages 9/10

    Find out what really happened.
  49. 11/22/63 by Stephen King 849 pages 9/10

King takes on time travel and the butterfly effect.
  50. The Atrocity Archives by Charles Stross 368 pages 9/10

Excellent. Dealing with arcane horrors using modern tech and magical mathematics.
  51. The Jennifer Morgue by Charles Stross 340 pages 9/10

Sequel to The Atrocity Archives. Fun!
  52. God, No!: Signs You May Already Be an Atheist and Other Magical Tales by Penn Jillette 231 pages 10/10

    What a Hoot!
  53. Mile 81 by Stephen King 80 pages 8/10

    Weird
  54. Flash and Bones by Kathy Reichs 278 pages 9/10

    Another good Bones book.
  55. The Fuller Memorandum by Charles Stross 312 pages 9/10

    Sequel to The Jennifer Morgue.
  56. Island of the Sequined Love Nun by Christopher Moore 325 pages 9/10

So far, I've really enjoyed all of Moore's books.
  57. The Elegant Universe: Superstrings, Hidden Dimensions, and the Quest for the Ultimate Theory by Brian Greene 447 pages 10/10

String theory begins to unite General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics.
  58. Drood by Dan Simmons 775 pages 9/10

    Good so far.

On June 2nd, I was in a near fatal motorcycle wreck and spent the better part of three months on pain killers. I found it very hard to concentrate on reading, so i'm a bit behind now.

As of Dec. 27, I am less than half way through Drood. I expect to finish it by New Years, but I probably won't start anything else until New Years Day. I made it through 58 books, with a five month period where I only read three books. Not counting those five months, I averaged 8 books a month. I think I shall try again next year and hopefully won't spend five months with my brain addled.

My read shelf:
