Mobi to Mobi TOC issue

I have a .mobi file from a client that is 60mb, and we need it below 50 to upload to Kindle Direct at Amazon. I have tried opening the mobi in Calibre, and then re-exporting .mobi. This actually reduces the file size by quite a bit, and seem to keep everything intact EXCEPT the meta TOC is not right. The original mobi file has several chapters and pages in the TOC, and the newly exported mobi only has the introduction page, acknowldgements page, and then cuts off.

Does anyone know how you can convert from mobi to mobi and keep the meta TOC intact? Which settings can I set?

Can you get the original files from the client? If so, maybe making it again using the higher level of compression will fix the size. If it has graphics, you could try recompressing them to a higher level if they are jpeg. If they are png, jpeg compression may help. Also lowering the bit depth if they are not full color might as well. This is of course thinking you can get the original files.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I have the original html, css, and image files. The image files have all been properly compressed. They are all 60-100kb. The size of the original files in total is about 30mb, so I'm not sure why their .mobi is 60mb.

I'm so close with the conversion though, I wish I could find a solution that would just fix this final TOC issue.

Use Mobipocket Creator to make the eBook. Set it to the highest level of compression and see how you get on.

Most likely they used Kindlegen, which embeds the source files along with actual .mobi file, which could easily double the size. You could use Kindlestrip.py to get rid of them, but I don't know if KDP will accept .mobi files without embedded source files.
You can test whether their .mobi file contains the source files with 7Zip or other multiformat archivers.

But would not Mobipocket Creator work fine then since it doesn't keep copies of the source embedded?

I would indeed work fine. However, since Mobipocket Creator hasn't been updated in ages, they're most likely better off using Kindlegen, especially if they used advanced layout techniques.

I think I may have figured out what the problem could be. This could be an issue with Kindlegen creating both the KF8 and Mobi versions in the same file. So the file would be larger in size now due to KF8. Is Aazon is being unreasonable now that they've modified Kindlegen to make file larger then before?
