Android Tablets nearing 40% of the tablet market

Quote:
The common belief that “there’s no tablet market, just an iPad market” may be changing.
Quote:
Here’s the reasoning. We know that Android tablet activations only include devices that use Google accounts for the device and apps. That rules out tablets such as the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet, both of which forgo the use of Google apps. So the 70,000 per day are tablets that are purely based on Google’s platform. Burnette notes that Apple sold 17 million iPads in its most recent fiscal quarter, which works out to 188,888 iPads sold each day, on average. Divide that figure into the 70,000 Android tablet sales number and you get 37.2 percent. (more...)
The figures don't take the Nook/Fire into account so the number of Android devices is slightly higher.

What will be interesting is to see how things will shake up when Windows 8 Tablets hit the market and who they will encroach on the most.

That feels about right. We were discussing earlier how the iPad share was consistently reported somewhere between 65% and 70% this year over the first two quarters, but that the impact of the Google Nexus 7 hadn't really been felt yet. Also, we know that Samsung tablet sales have been accelerating, pulling well ahead of Amazon overall.

So, with a recent push from Google and Samsung we could certainly have seen the most recent figures for activations have taken another 5% to 10% bite out of the iPad, bringing Android overall, including Kindle and Nook, to about 40% of the market.

Most 7" buyers (in my reading) were turned off by iPad price and size and were never going to buy it.

Nexus and Amazon into new market.

I'm turned off by iPad's price and Apple's attitude. I don't own any iDevices and don't really want one. I'm not saying I wouldn't take one if someone gave it to me, but I'm heavily into the Google/Android ecosystem with multiple devices, and they meet my needs, so I don't see the need for a iAnything just to keep up with the Joneses.

Same here, pretty much. That, and after having played with some of them, I just don't see the appeal. Sure, they look nice (most of the time), but I've no reason to get one.

The math is wrong.

The 'market' would be the total number of tablets sold, using their numbers, 188,888 iPads per day + 70,000 Androids = 258,888 per day, of which 70,000 is 27%.

The 70,000 is 37% of 188,888 but that isn't Androids share of the market. That means they are selling 37% of what Apple is selling.

I didn't see a source in the OP so don't know from whom or where the error came.

Apple had the right combination of form and function with the iPod, then they just continued to build on it. They certainly weren't the first to market with most of their products, and perhaps not even the best function wise, but they did a good job of marketing. I think they are overpriced and trendy now... just my opinion... and you know what they say about opinions. :P

all marketing does is draw attention and get people to try it . the device itself has to be compelling enough to keep selling afterward.

Well, apparently marketing is powerful enough so that an inferior product can be sold at a higher price. This has been demonstrated for many products, cosmetics are the most obvious example. So is beer.

How many prospective buyers really understand all the competing products in a market? This is real life, not economics 101 "the enlightened consumer who makes perfectly rational decisions".

The article is not saying Android owns 40% of the market. What it is saying is Android tablets sales are selling 40% of iPad Sales. In other words for every 5 iPads sold there are 2 Android tablets sold.

Their talking to the statement: "There is no Tablet market, it's an iPad market."

Well, in another 6 months the statement "Android owns 40% of the non-Windows tablet market" may well be true.
