Macworld: IDW unleashes Comics for Apple's iBooks as Fixed Width ePubs

http://www.macworld.com/article/1621...c.twt_macworld

Quote:
These titles are some of the first comics to use the fixed-layout ePub format Apple’s made available in the iBookstore. “The ePub format is very different than what we’re able to put together [in an app],” said Webber. An app can provide more control, offering features like panel-to-panel zoom and auto-play. With the fixed-layout format, however, IDW has been able to work with the iBooks team to release the comics in a way that makes sense as an ebook.
I realize the format is just for iOS for now, but am curious if the fixed-layout ePub type format will become popular for other ePub aware devices. I understand the Nook Kids format may be similar?

Plus I found it interesting in light of Amazon's move to PDF for more complex layouts.

I don't know nothing 'bout formats but it looks like Apple is positioning iBooks as the go to place for comics or graphic novels orwhatever you want to call them . Interesting, that.
Well, Apple is building on its strengths. It may never be able to compete with Amazon on prices or breadth of catalog for ebooks, and B&N and Kobo can offer the bricks and mortar experience. Apple, however, may just have the knowhow and design expertise to offer technically better graphic-intensive products .
