Recipes vs. Paid Subscriptions (Original Title: From a Newbie)

I have had my Kindle less than a week and just discovered Calibre.

How do the magazines/newspapers that I can get from Calibre differ from those in a paid subscription? Especially interested in

New Yorker
New York Times
Economist

Thanks
SoCal

This would probably be a question best asked in the Calibre section of the forum - HERE.

Maybe on of the mods will move it for you.

Sorry, I don't have an answer (I do not use that function of Calibre), but I'm sure someone will.

Welcome to MR!

I don't really think it differs. Maybe the magazine/newspaper has a bit more meat in it, but to me, not really anything different. Sometimes, you have to subscribe to the paper/mag to get more articles or the full version of articles. Calibre, however, downloads very nicely, and formats wonderfully for the Kindle 3. I download many from many news sources, such as the Economist, TIME, Huffington Post, and LifeHacker and they're really good. I recommend you try the Fetch News feature out as soon a possible.

The free Calibre recipes provide free content selected by the Calibre recipe author. The subscription based Calibre recipes provide subscription content selected by the Calibre subscription recipe author. The official subscription authors employed by the site to make downloadable ebooks, pdfs, etc. provide the content the site selects to include.

To summarize, the different versions provide content selected by the authors of the different versions. Sometimes they are nearly the same. Sometimes they differ greatly. Sometimes the differences are because the subscription content is behind a paywall. Sometimes the differences are merely because the authors want to show different things. Calibre authors (subscription and free) tend to remove all advertisements. The official subscription authors may or may not remove ads. The few times I've compared, I've been amazed that the Calibre recipe is often the same or better than the official version.

I know you wanted specifics, but those who subscribe probably don't use Calibre, and vice-a-versa, so finding someone who knows the detailed differences may be difficult. If you learn the answer, post it here.
